About the Author

Christine Alfano has been a lecturer in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric since 1998. She holds a BA from Brown University and PhD from Stanford and specializes in digital rhetoric. In her recent PWR courses, “The Rhetoric of Gaming,” “Networked Rhetoric,” "Technologies of iDentity" and "Cultural Interfaces," Christine challenges students to explore how writing in different technological modes (from traditional Microsoft Word documents, to blogs, threaded discussions, social network profiles, video blogs, and wikis) transforms the modern practice of communication and how we represent ourselves online and off. In addition, Christine is the technology specialist for the Cross-Cultural Rhetoric Project, a project that allows Stanford PWR students to engage in intercultural collaboration with students from other universities around the world using video conferencing and other modes of communication technologies.

Dr. Alyssa J. O'Brien is a Lecturer in the Program and Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, where she directs the Cross-Cultural Rhetoric initiative and publishes scholarship and textbooks on visual rhetoric, writing pedagogy, and global learning. She has been an invited speaker in Asia and Europe on subjects such as global learning, communication for leadership, visual rhetoric, and “mapping a change in writing.” In 2006, Alyssa won the Phi Beta Kappa Outstanding Teaching Award, and what she enjoys most is helping people discover their voices in writing of all kinds. Her current first- and second-year writing courses focus on visual rhetoric, cross-cultural rhetoric, globalization, and communication for leadership. Before coming to Stanford in 2001, she taught composition, creative writing, literature, and business writing at Cornell University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Rochester.��

The Longest Day

I have been a mainframe programmer for 13 years and have done web design for the past year. The following is my experience with this book.
First the good news:

1. I was able to successfully install PHP, Apache & MySQL.
2. I was able to successfully complete all the projects in the book.
3. I published one of my projects on a website.
Now the bad news:
1. There were critical typos in the book--not just captions under the wrong pictures but incorrect code. I spent many hours debugging the PHP code for the projects. The code errors I found were not in the errata on the SAMS website OR on thickbook.com. I sent one code correction to the editors and received an acknowledgement, but I just checked and the code typo is not included in the errata. There are code errors on pp. 245, 406, 417. E-mail me if you are also having problems with the code on those pages as the SAMS people do not seem to be concerned or aware of these errors.
2. The installation of the products did not go as smoothly as I hoped either. The instructions on what to download did not match how the websites now look. There was some missing information. I was able to get it all working only with a lot of trial and error.
This book contained projects that I was interested in learning: address book, storefront, shopping cart. With a little more diligence on the part of the proofreaders and technical editors, this book would have been great and I would have given it 5 stars.

Hi - I am the author of this book, and I want to make sure everyone understands where this book comes from. It's parts of three different books, with several new chapters. It's fairly beginner-ish in nature, but you definitely have to have a handle on how the Web works, from an administrative standpoint, to get your brain around the Apache chapters. The MySQL and PHP chapters assume less pre-existing knowledge, and are pretty fun, hands-on and oriented through working through lessons.
This is not the be all and end all PHP, Apache and MySQL book -- that would take way longer than 24 hours -- nor is it meant to be. But it will teach the fundamentals of all three things, and provide you with a strong foundation for more advanced books. Exellent book - December 2003 Edition

First, be sure you purchase the latest edition of every tech book you buy. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't have the latest edition under Meloni's or Zandsta's name. You have to type the isbn number, 0672326205, in the search box to find the newest edition as of this review. Also keep in mind when reading reviews that Amazon mixes reviews of older editions with new editions which makes it very difficult to make an assessment unless the edition is mentioned in the review. New editions usually correct the complaints given in bad reviews so don't pass judgment so quickly unless you know exactly which edition the reviewer is writing about.
This is an excellent book for beginners who know nothing about programming. However you must know XHTML before beginning this book.
This book and "Teach Yourself PHP in 24 Hours" by Zandstra are built using exactly, word for word, much of the same content. However Meloni's book occasionally has more explicate examples and explanation, however it is missing four essential chapters that can be found in Zandstra's book.
1. Arrays
2. Objects
3. Regular Expressions
4. PEAR - Reusable Components to Extend the Power of PHP
No real concern, because the reader could research these topics on php.net or other sites and my have to do so in order to complete the book since it refers to arrays but doesn't explain them.
Meloni's book, compared to Zandsta's, does have better examples with actual programs that may be usful to you. Meloni's book, as the title emplies, also goes deeper into Apache and MySQL.
After reading this book, you'll wont to get something like, The PHP Anthology By Harry Fuecks Vol. 1&2... or PHP and MySQL Web Development, Second Edition by Luke Welling, Laura Thomson. These books will teach you by example and are excellent.
A note to beginners... Learning to program can be very difficult. Unless you are some kind of genius, you must be dedicated and patient with your quest. Programming is a totally different way of thinking and there is a lot to learn... I think this book is a great way to learn PHP and to learn how to program in general.

Great Basics Review but Could be Better/Improved

I got 99th percentile on my GMAT 750(49, 42) and i used 3 books: this one, Kaplan's book with CD and Verbal Workbook. I had access to PR book and GMAT Prep, but I did only tests from those. I found Kaplan's materials of quality and difficulty. Some whine that Kaplan is too hard, but that's good - if you can handle Kaplan, you can handle the GMAT. Please see the section at the very bottom of the review - I have included a list of my favorite problems from this book - those are the most fun!

~~~ PROS: ~~~
- Condensed math concept review - straight to the point
- No smart-aleck advice about some stupid tricks - only math review - exactly what I needed
- Solid problems that illustrate a lot of traps and multiple ways of solving them
- Starts with the basics - arithmetic, integers, primes, etc - the stuff that anybody can uses a review of. A lot of applicants underestimate how much they forgot the basics and skim/skip them. I would not do that, and that book does not either.
- Finally, the number of questions and quizzes in this book is impressive. I am giving a short summary of some of the sections of the book and number of quizzes and test questions. Quiz questions are math only; Test questions are GMAT-type questions.

~~~ CONS: ~~~
- No probability or combinations review, which would be very helpful. Get something. I bombed my probability question on the GMAT.
- I went through this book at least 3 times (helping others) and I found that solutions don't include some of the most genius ways to handle the problems. I think the authors of the questions went beyond themselves.
- Errors (even though this is the 6th edition and it barely changed compared to the 1st and 2nd, there are a few typos and just careless errors - it's a shame)
- Not as thorough as the MGMAT guides (those cover more topics in-depth and perhpas a wider area). Also, if you are rusty with math (really rusty), you may want to get the Kaplan Math Foundations or Foundations of GMAT Math by Manhattan GMAT.

1. No significant updates over the years. This book has remained virtually unchanged since the second edition (for the last 8 years). You are welcome to purchase any of the previous editions to have the same effect.
2. It is a good/great book but there are now other great books out there (MGMAT Guides, Veritas Prep Guides) that give this book a run for its money

Finally, please make sure you have a copy of the Official Guide for the GMAT (OG) - if you have not discovered it, I highly recommend you get yoruself a copy as it is published by GMAC and contains 900 official GMAT Questions.

So far, I have not discovered any errors. I am sure some will surface as I have not seen a book yet without any. When I find any, I will list them on this page.
(All of the typos and omissions found in the 6th edition have been fixed)

Okay review of basics

This book has a good, comprehensive review of math basics for the GMAT exam. However, the intro/review of methods at the beginning of each chapter before the problems is very short and concise. If you need more thorough explanations, you may want to supplement with additional GMAT review books. The practice problems are good though, and the explanations are helpful.

One thing to keep in mind - expect the actual problems in the math section of the exam to be quite a bit more difficult and complex than the example problems in this book. I did well on the exam, but I found the problems to be more complicated than I thought they would be after completion of this book. This book is a good review of the very basics, but you will need to be able to do more than the basics on the actual exam.

Not as good as other workbooks out there...

This is a horrible prep book! Not because of difficultly or length but because the content does not mirror the actual exam. I became very skeptical at how easy the questions, quizzes and exams were in this book. Kaplan chooses to focus on the lower difficulty questions which makes the book obsolete if you are shooting for 650+. If you plan to sit the GMAT, I would highly recommend the Princeton Review line. They are definitely a better representation of what the exam entails and the types of questions you need to practice.

About the Author
John M. Yumoto is perhaps the foremost authority on the samurai sword outside of Japan. A native of California, he began his study of Japanese swrodcraft during his early childhood in Japan. While in Japan he studied under a number of masters from different schools and learned the art of sword polishing and of identification and evaluation. He has held membership in a number of sword clubs and at present is an active member of the Japan Society for the Preservation of the Samurai Sword and the Northern California Sword Club. He has also been requested to serve as advisor to the Japanese Sword Society of the United States, presently being organized.

Somewhat dry in presentation...

This is a fairly serious overview of Samurai swords intended for someone who is interested in collecting them (or perhaps has inherited one). That is, this is quite a 'theoretical' book intended to convey, in a quite concise manner, the myriad of details needed to identify Samurai swords.
The book goes through a very brief overview of Japan's sword history including some very rough information on the swords produced in various time periods. Mixed in here is a tiny amount of non-technical information in the form of some tales of how the special clay-coating heat-treating process was invented.
The book then presents detailed information on such subjects as blade curvature, temper lines, tip profile, tang markings and finishing. This section has a number of line drawings that do help convey the information in a clear and simple manner.
This leads into a very in-depth section with the Japanese characters that could be found on a sword tang. This section is quite long and, considering the book's purpose, not really very useful to the majority of people. That is, without understanding Japanese you really aren't likely to be able to use this section - it would be much better to consult with someone who does understand Japanese.
I really had hoped for more of an overview of the history with some details on the more famous crafters. There is also very little information on the manufacturing process other than some very cursory paragraphs and drawings. I agree that this subject deserves many books but I also think that since it is not really highlighted in this volume, a beginner will have no real reason to understand WHY certain eras and smiths were regarded so highly. That is, without more background on the process one is left asking the question "what is wrong with a stainless-steel blade?".
One for the serious collector but you will definitely need other books on the subject to really get an appreciation of the remarkable nature of the Samurai sword.

I was once told "If you are interested in buying a real samurai sword buy this book read it once and then read it again and again." There is probably no other book, in english, that has as much info on antique samurai blades as this book. A must for anyone interested in sword collecting or even a serious martial artist.

If you own ONE book....

This book is exactly what you need to understand the factors that determine rarity and value. It contains a comprehensive delineation of the varieties of each sword part, maker dates and places, and a good dose of relevant history to the development and use of the sword.
This is not the ONLY book you need - but it should be the first.
This small investment can literally save you thousands in mistaken purchases...you will quickly see why you should save your money, i.e. don't buy several $400 swords from Ebay, and rather purchase the "special" (albeit expensive) blade.
There are too many hoaxers out there, and you need to visualize your purpose. Do you want a fragile 15th century relic? A modern (and very pricey) blade of Iaido practice? A WWII (and prior) collectible? What's the difference?
Why be able to read the maker's mark? What difference doe it make? Do you want the master's blade, the student's blade or the machine made? Better find out the difference before you invest.
Would you buy coins without a Redbook? Stamps without a Scotts'?

So. Freaking. Good.

In case you missed it, I'd like to point out that this is the second book in a series, so this review will have spoilers from the first book. If you haven't read the first book, go back and read the first book (because its end is awesome even if the rest of it always isn't) and then come back later. Or just go straight to reading this book, because this book was perfection.

Inferno takes place right after where Vendetta ended, and since the reader is right in the thick of things from the beginning of this book, every moment of the novel is filled with excitement. The mafia plays a much larger part in this installment than in the last, and several secrets about each character are revealed as the plot progresses. There are some really dark parts to the novel, especially at the end, at which point I was holding my breath in a rather painful attempt not to cry in front of my roommate. It was so dark, but there was also a heart-wrecking, romantically charged moment in the middle of it all - another scene that tried to pull tears out of my eyes. While there was so much more to the plot than just the romance, I have to talk about it, because of Luca aka the apple of my eye.

At the very end of Vendetta, readers get two letters. One from Luca to Sophie, and one from her to him. The last few pages of the book was the first moment I fell in love with the book, and the author took the small beginning between the two and exploded it in this book. Their scenes were full of wit and humor, and we get to see a side of Luca that wasn't apparent in the first book. The contrast between him and his brother Nic is rather astounding considering the impressions of each of them readers got in book one, and the author seamlessly wrote the book and plot in a way that didn't make it seem like a love triangle at all. To be honest, I feel like going back and reading all of the Luca scenes again. So basically the whole book.

I tend to love books with good quotes in them, and this one had a ton. I highlighted so many different quotes/scenes in my kindle, and I get crazy emotional every time I read over them, or even simply think about them. Catherine Doyle, you are my hero.

Crazily enough, this series will always be in my head as an alternative to Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, so if you enjoyed the series, or like the idea of the series but not so much the writing, the vampires, or the romance, then I recommend these books. However, if you find book one boring, just wait until the end, because by then you'll be begging for book two (and Luca).

Dark and Thrilling!

Green Giants is my feature where I share some of my favourite books by Irish Authors. I’m passionate about Irish Authors, they supply us with a great and exciting mix of books, hopefully you will find something new to try. Today it’s a series that I’m loving that I want to persuade as many YA fans as possible to read!

This is Green Giants take 2 for Catherine Doyle. Last year Vendetta was one of my favourite YA books and Inferno was a rock solid follow up. This review does include spoilers for Vendetta so if you are not familiar with this series maybe go read that review instead.

Vendetta was an exciting rollercoaster of book and Inferno took that rollercoaster and made it even more dangerous and thrilling. It’s a book that pulsates with energy and love and hate. It continues the ongoing feud between two Mafia families and our main character Sophie is caught slap bang in the middle.

“I was part of something bigger, a player in a world that lived and breathed passion and danger, and it was wrong, and scary, but it was more than just existing, and now that I had experience it, it was hard to shut off.”

One thing that really caught my attention in book one was that there was a sniff of a love triangle and it was a love triangle that I wanted to happen! Yes me, that person who hates love triangles! But this one was so promising that I wanted to see it play out. And it did. With heart stopping tender moments and dangerous tension. It was all I wanted and more.

The character development continues in this one. Sophie is no longer as innocent as she was in Vendetta, her eyes have been opened wide as to what she has been born into. Her indecisions and fears and mixed emotions left me as tangled up as she was.

All there really is left to say is bring on bring on book 3. I’m more than ready for more fighting, more tension, more romance and more Falcone/Marino showdowns.

Who should read Inferno by Catherine Doyle?

If you enjoyed Vendetta, then I think you will be more than satisfied with what happened next. If you enjoy YA books with a brisk, adrenaline packed pace and lots of dark undertones then I have no hesitation in recommending this to you. Or if you like the sound of a YA series that is Romeo & Juliet meets The Sopranos, then go for it!

The English Roses teaches kids to not let people be left out just because of their looks. I read the books, I love the books and I think the books are really good. I just ordered more of them. Madonna is a good singer but I like her books better.

I can take or leave Madonna's music but her books are awesome. I use them in my classroom. They are a good way to help girls of this age group to see some of the ways they mis-treat each other and how to be more mature.

it was a great book. and it is a clean book no dirty language, i think if you are a young adult then you might like the books also. i suggest kid from 8-16 years old would enjoy them as much as i do. i hope this helps you get these books.
