Ted Hills has been active in the Information Technology industry since 1975. Starting with microprocessor design and "bare metal" programming, Ted moved gradually up through device drivers and operating systems to communications software, applications, and finally information architecture. The Definitive Book for Modeling in the Big Data World

This is the definitive book for anyone seeking a modeling technique that works with the complexities of big data. There are so many things in the NoSQL world that just don't fit into entity-relationship and star-schema models. The first challenge is modeling to understand and describe existing data instead of modeling to design databases. But that is the reality of big data -- it exists without models and usually with insufficient metadata. Next we are challenged by data constructs that don't fit neatly into entity-relationship structures including many-to-many relationships, multi-valued attributes, embedded arrays, associations implemented without foreign key relationships, and much more. Key-value stores, document stores, graph databases, etc. just aren't easily described with ER modeling. Ted Hills has developed an extension of object modeling that he calls Concept and Object Modeling Notation (COMN) that elegantly steps up to the needs of big data modeling. He presents the notation and the modeling technique in a way that is clear and easily understood for a variety of people with different backgrounds and data experiences.

Some thoughts from an earlier review and TDAN blog are included in the book description above. But I had the urge to say more. I had the opportunity to review the manuscript before publishing and to get to know Ted Hills. I learned from this book and I've been a data modeler for more than 30 years. Reading the book expanded my knowledge and getting to know Ted enriched my professional network. Good stuff all around!

Groundbreaking Thought Leadership in Data Modeling

Disclosure: Before this book was published, I met the author in person while attending his COMN course at a conference. I suggested to him that he should meet Steve Hoberman and see if Steve’s Technics Publications might publish it. It was neat to learn that Technics did so, and I was happy to see Ted’s note on that in his acknowledgements.
This is a very specialized, yet indeed groundbreaking book on data modeling, and I believe it will serve as a valuable conceptual reference to keep data modeling abreast of current technology.

NoSQL technologies continue to experience rapid increases in adoption, but their prescribed data structures, in order to scale along with these NoSQL distributed data systems, to unprecedented levels of data throughput, depart radically from classic physical implementations of entity-relational and dimension data models. As they continue to gain market adoption, undoubtedly there will be an increased need to establish common conceptual and logical data models, and then markedly different physical data models to represent the data physically in NoSQL technologies, in order to provide the benefits of a good data model: shared understanding, standardization, extensibility to related data subject areas, load performance, query performance, and a straightforward interoperability with relational databases, which continue to be the bulwark back-end for transactional processing.

Unfortunately, but for very good reason, most or all traditional data modeling products cannot even express many prevalent NoSQL model patterns, such as indeterminate levels of nested sub-attributes, as well as situations where some records contain a different set of attributes than other records within a single table or file. The reason, of course, is that those NoSQL physically-instantiated model patterns themselves radically depart from the classic physical data model patterns in relational or dimensional, models. So, where does this leave the enterprise data architect who is supposed to establish a roadmap for enterprise data management? Where does that leave the typical data modeler – the vast majority of whom are familiar mostly with entity-relational modeling, but who is now supposed to design for interoperability between NoSQL and relational data? When this data modeler perceives that some of the NoSQL modeling notation looks more like UML (Unified Modeling Language), wherein objects, types and variables have a maddeningly divergent meaning than in entity-relationship data modeling, it only adds yet another, unfortunately long-standing area of confusion. Although it will surprise nobody to learn that early attempts by data modelers to establish common model patterns or design for logical interoperability between these disparate systems will not quickly bear fruit, the need for that interoperability and standardization will not go away simply because it is difficult.

The point where we acknowledge that (1) the gap between RDBMS and NoSQL design is not superficial, that (2) it goes far deeper than simply a feature gap in the data modeling tools -- but rather in the underlying terminology and symbols of data modeling, and that (3) we must continue to build models to reap maximize value from our data solutions – is the point at which we turn to Ted Hills and this ground-breaking book. We simply cannot build the understandable data models that lead to well-designed, highly interoperable data systems, without doing so.

Whether a reader is a relational data modeler, an object-oriented programmer, a UML-modeler, or a NoSQL Architect, Ted Hills guides each reader to a common set of concepts, and most specifically, the flexible and semantically robust Common Objective Modeling Notation (COMN) that Tedd Hills has invented.

Disclosure: Ted and I have worked together for several years and while I was not familiar with the COMN diagramming / modelling technique before reading the book, I have listened to several of Ted's presentations on concept modeling and data modeling.

The book is easy to read and well laid out. It presents the data modeling techniques in the context of simple, yet illustrative real-world problems. The language used to describe the technique is extremely precise, with great care taken to use terms that have meaning in the real world rather than computer-ese.

A clear precise diagram is invaluable in communicating concepts and the COMN diagramming language and modeling technique are going to prove extremely valuable wherever they are adopted.

Featured Recipe: Mushroom Stroganoff

Stroganoff originated in Russia as a beef dish served in a rich sour cream sauce. And though there are many versions of the original recipe, I prefer this plant-based one, made with rich porcini mushrooms and lots of fresh herbs.

Serves 4

• 2 large shallots, peeled and minced
• 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
• 2 teaspoons minced thyme
• Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
• 1 teaspoon minced rosemary
• 1 pound portobello mushrooms, stemmed and cut into large pieces
• 1 ounce porcini mushrooms, soaked for 30 minutes in 1 cup of hot water that has just been boiled
• � cup dry white wine
• 1 pound whole-grain fettuccine, cooked according to package directions, drained, and kept warm
• 1 cup Tofu Sour Cream (recipe follows)
• Chopped parsley

Place the shallots in a large skillet and saut� over a medium heat for 8 minutes. Add water 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time to keep them from sticking. Add the garlic and thyme, and cook for another minute. Stir in the salt and pepper, rosemary, and the portobello mushrooms and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the porcini mushrooms, and their soaking liquid, and the wine. Stir, and cook over medium-low heat for 20 minutes.

When the stroganoff is finished cooking, stir in the sour cream. Add the cooked noodles and toss well. Serve garnished with the parsley.

Tofu Sour Cream

Use this healthy dairy alternative in any dish that calls for sour cream. Serve it with baked potatoes and fresh chives, with tacos or enchiladas, or with Mushroom Stroganoff.

Makes 1� cups

• 1 package extra firm lite silken tofu, drained
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
• Salt to taste

Combine all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth and creamy. Chill until ready to serve.

It gives vegan food a bad rep

I have been vegan for two years in large part to the Forks Over Knives documentary. However, the recipes in this book are - I'm sorry to say - just plain awful. For some reason the author puts sweeteners in just about everything (especially brown rice syrup) which is unnecessary and tastes bizarre most of the time. This is combined with dull flavors which make the frequently inedible. I've tried about 20 to 30 recipes from this book and have really wanted to like it...I just don't. Best advice: find some great vegan cooking blogs and use those recipes. Otherwise The Passionate Vegetarian is always a good resource.

a must have recipe book, but don't expect too many pictures

I recently watched "Forks Over Knifes" and got enough inspiration to try learning to cook using more healthier vegetable-centric ingredients. I received this book a few days ago and started cooking.

As a reference point, please keep in mind that I'm a typical guy who used to eat 20oz Rib-Eye stake and considered mashed potatoes my daily serving of vegetable. Besides, vegetables are what my food ate.

The book starts with explanation of the differences in the vegetable ingredients, fundamentals of cooking such as preparing your stock & sauces, then quickly moves to breakfast, salads, soups, stews, chilies, grilled, wraps, stir-fried, baked, casseroles, and desserts.

Unlike other cookbooks, all of the above use vegetable as primary ingredient using cooking methods from around the world. For example, I enjoy miso soup with my sushi, but never knew that miso sauce was made using mirin and paired with rice.

While this book concisely explains the ingredients and cooking directions in plain English, the author/publisher seem to forget that a picture is worth a thousand words. For example, page 168 has one of my favorite Thai dishes, Pad Thai. While the cooking directions are clear, I wish they had a picture of the final dish to help me "toss the sauce with the cooked pasta and garnish with the peanuts". I do "eat" with my eyes and nose before the taste. To their credit, included are a dozen full page photos of dishes but they are more like teasers for the next cookbook.

Overall, a must buy. Would I recommend? Absolutely!

I'm a professional chef and I bought this book looking for inspiration with cooking. I've made quite a few recipes from this book. The recipes are gross... result in bland, bad tasting food...

A photochemist's paradise

This is a gem of a book. It comprehensively covers the subject and is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it for courses on photochemistry and for practitioners in all areas of the photosciences. Having been afforded the opportunity to comment on sections of the book prior to its publication, I am well aware of the care that went into providing the accurate and up to date descriptions of physical concepts and reaction mechanisms that are the hallmark of this book. The knowledge explosion that occurred in the course of the preceding half century has led some to conclude that the photochemistry of organic molecules is a mature field. By describing the intricacies of photophysical and photochemical responses of a cornucopia of selected molecules this book dispels this notion.

This is not only an important reference book for dam engineers but all engineers, students and interested people, who want to understand the technical aspects of dams. The author has discussed the various aspects of dam engineering and the possible solutions based on a large number of case studies rather than focusing on pure analysis aspects. It is obvious that before any analysis can be done, the problem and the possible solutions must be understood first and it has to be demonstrated that the solutions are feasible, which is shown by the examples given. […] The author has also shown that many solutions for dams are possible depending on the topography and geology as well as on the flood and seismic hazards at the site. Therefore all dams are prototypes and none is like the other.
The emphasis of the book is clearly on dams. However, appurtenant hydraulic structures such as spillways, surface and high head gates, bottom outlets, run-of-river power plants, locks, and pump storage plants are also discussed.
This book provides an overview on both the state-of-practice and state-of-the-art in dam engineering and is written in a way that it can easily be understood by non-experts as well. The book is very useful and is highly recommended.

About the Author

Ljubomir Tanchev was born in 1945 in Prilep (Republic of Macedonia). He moved to Skopje in 1950 where he finished the primary and secondary school and graduated in Civil Engineering from the Sts Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje. He obtained his M.Sc. in 1980 and was awarded his Ph.D. on the subject of Numerical analysis of embankment dams from the same university in 1987. In 1978/79 he completed a post-graduate study at IHE in Delft, The Netherlands.

He began his career working in the laboratory for testing of materials of the CC "Mavrovo" (Skopje) as a research engineer between 1972 and 1977. Then he joined the Sts Cyril and Methodius University, Faculty of Civil Engineering, as assistant. In 1988 he was appointed Assistant Professor, in 1992 Associate Professor and in 1996 Professor, covering the topics of Dams and Hydraulic Structures. He has been Head of the Department of Hydraulic Structures, vice-Dean and from October 1999 till October 2003 Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Sts Cyril and Methodius University. He retired in October 2010, but is still active in various projects. He was president of the Macedonian Committee on Large Dams (a member of ICOLD) from May 2004 till June 2013.

Over his 40 years of practice, Professor Tanchev has been involved in many hydraulic engineering projects as a designer, consultant, and supervisor. He has published more than 50 scientific works and he is the author of three books published in Macedonian: Static analysis of embankment dams (1989), Hydraulic structures (1992) and Dams and appurtenant hydraulic structures (1999). For the latter book, Prof. Tanchev was awarded the Goce Delchev Prize, the highest state prize for achievement in the sciences. The first English edition of Dams and Appurtenant Hydraulic Structures was published in 2005 by CRC Press / Balkema.

Another side of Brando

The Author was the daughter of Brando's dentist.She was 20 years old when they
met and he was 52.Their relationship lasted close to 30 years but according to her
they never had sex because she said Brando didn't want to find another dentist.Brando
was compulsive about his habits,whether it was food,sex,or when he was slighted
by his friends.He called her at work,at her home (even though she was married)and
over the years was employed and fired by him twice.
She comes across as a weak individual lacking confidence in her early years.Her
husband was an alcoholic and Brando warned her against marring him but she did
not heed his advice. Some of the conversations are interesting but also perverse,
Brando coming across as a serial manipulator and a misogynist.She comes across
as a victim and he in his words a "monster".
This book more or less reinforces information previously written about him but it is
still fascinating why we should still care about him after his death.

And for nearly thirty years, he tested his friendship with Ms. Peardon, sometimes turning away, but always returning.

a different look at brando

i've read most of the brando books and this is a welcome fresh perspective. it is not a standard bio, but a memoir and love story. she was the daughter of brando's dentist. they met when she was 20 and knew each other until his death 28 years later.
"he allowed me to love the man who lived sequestered behind the unfathomable persona of marlon brando," she writes, "and he made me feel unconditionally loved in return."
here's what he told her once: "nancy, you must understand, there are only five people in this world that i trust. and, as it turns out, you're one of those five people."
but their relationship wasn't always easy. he once locked her in the trunk of his car, just for sport. that anecdote, and others i'd read elsewhere about his mistreatment of people, brings to mind blanche dubois' words about deliberate cruelty -- "it is the one unforgivable thing." but peardon forgave and/or gave back during their quarrels.
one thing that distinguishes this book is its up close and personal nature. another is the graceful writing. other reviewers have mentioned her candor. indeed, you appreciate her honesty. she doesn't seem to have left much out. you'll come to like her as you read this book. as for brando, exasperating, charming and dozens of other adjectives. i liked this vignette about his dog:
"i witnessed marlon and tim sharing many secrets during tim's lifetime. marlon would whisper in tim's ear, and i'd watch tim raise one eyebrow, as he'd hold his giant mastiff head very still and listen. only his eyebrow would indicate the import of some of their secrets."
peardon and brando's friendship started with a 4 1/2 hour phone call that went until 3 a.m., after which he tried to persuade her to go to the beach to watch the sun rise. the book ends with his memorial service, sensitively described.

Professor Jacobson adopts a Direct Compositionality approach, whereby the syntax builds the expressions while the semantics simultaneously assigns each a model-theoretic interpretation. Alongside this approach, the author also presents a competing view that makes use of an intermediate level, Logical Form. She develops parallel treatments of a variety of phenomena from both points of view with detailed comparisons. The book begins with simple and fundamental concepts and gradually builds a more complex fragment, including analyses of more advanced topics such as focus, negative polarity, and a variety of topics centering on pronouns and binding more generally. Exercises are provided throughout, alongside open-ended questions for students to consider. The exercises are interspersed with the text to promote self-discovery of the fundamentals and their applications.

A simple and intuitive hypothesis about the relation between form and meaning is that every principle of grammar that says something about the syntactic composition of two expressions also says something about the meaning of the resulting complex expression. This hypothesis, known as direct compositionality, can sometimes appear difficult to maintain in the face of the complexity of human language, in which structure and meaning often seem to be related in fairly abstract ways. And yet Pauline Jacobson has shown conclusively in her work over the past thirty-five years how this approach can lead to insightful analyses and significant new discoveries about the nature of meaning. Now Jacobson has distilled this work into a new textbook in which she skilfully leads students through the complexities of building a theory of the syntax-semantics interface from the ground up, taking direct compositionality as the guiding principle but also engaging with other perspectives on the relation between syntax and semantics and identifying points of divergence and convergence. This book masterfully equips students with the technical and formal skills that will allow them to engage with contemporary work in semantic theory. About the Author

Pauline Jacobson is currently Professor of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences at Brown University. She has held visiting appointments at Ohio State University and Harvard University, and has been a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Her research is mainly concerned with constructing formal models of the semantics and syntax of natural language - and in particular on the way that the syntax and the semantics interact. Her work has been published in a number of journals, including Journal of Semantics, Natural Language Semantics, and Linguistics and Philosophy, and she is co-editor, with Chris Barker, of Direct Compositionality (OUP 2007).
