Entertaing satire with a lot of truth in it as well. Enjoyable and recommended!

I remember watching a scene from Whit Stillman's 1990 film "Metropolitan", about a not-so-rich college student named Tom Townsend, who attends events where intellectuals go to and when he somehow ends up going to a party with them. He discusses conversations about Lionel Trilling, Fanny Price, Jane Austen novels, etc. And right after high school, I found myself connecting to this film because I wanted to be part of this circle of intellectuals.

Granted, I was not born a WASP, nor would I be attending an Ivy League college, nor was I born in a wealthy family but I had a thirst for intellectual conversations, I had a strong interest in foreign cinema, art, politics, opera and classical music.

How the 18-year-old me, would have loved to read Nick Kolakowski's "How to Become an Intellectual: 100 Mandatory Maxims to Metamorphose into the Most Learned at Thinkers".

A hilarious, fascinating and fun book, Kolakowski's book has a lot of truth in it but also things that shouldn't be taken to literally. In the book, Kolakowski offers 100 maxims, several paragraphs of why, a theory into practice of how one can include it in their life and the inevitable footnote.

For example, Kolakowski's first Maxim is to "Carry an Intellectual Book (At all Times)". Personally, these days, I know of no one who carries a book with them at all times, unless its on their iPad, Kindle Fire or Nook (including magazine subscriptions which I see many friends downloading digital copies to their tablet), but aside from the conversations of books at a restaurant or event, to a person's home to look at their library with a plethora of books, it's all about one's willingness to engage in conversations about books and know what people are talking about. While there are some who will understand the conversations of authors. My personal feeling is if one reads books continually, you can easily get into the conversation of explaining what the book is about and make one curious.

And when it comes to books, I go back to "Metropolitan" for the popular quote by Tom Townsend:

AUDREY: What Jane Austen novels have you read?

TOM: None. I don't read novels. I prefer good literary criticism. That way you get both the novelist's ideas as well as the critics thinking. With fiction, I can never forget that none of it ever really happened, that its all just made up by the author.

Another Maxim featured is #4, "Learn Some Truly Enormous Words". When I was working in politics, one of my mentors would recommend me to purchase a book of words that I need to know. She was big on cultural literacy but when I went to college, my professor was adamant of not using big words because people will not know what the heck I'm talking about.

It's been years since I've graduated and I admit that for a short time, I strayed away from using words that most people don't know. But that changed. Reading books from my favorite writers, books from film critics and even knowing people like myself who would read a dictionary and mark the words down such as author and former 20/20 correspondent Aliza Davidovit (I highly recommend her book "The Words that Shaped Me" - The Words That Shaped Me: A journalist's brilliant, touching and hilarious journey through the dicti), there is nothing wrong with using big words. In fact, my friends and associates tend to use them quite a bit. But there is a time and a place to use these words. Great among your intellectual circle of friends, great for your written article or review but not used with everyone.

Maxim 15 is about "Understand Opera, Even If You Never Enjoy It". I grew up on rock n' roll, R&B and hip-hop. And also, some country and '50s songs. But has anyone watched "Pretty Woman" and you saw the character played by Julia Roberts attending her first opera and was passionate about it right after. I knew nothing about opera but that scene struck me and I went out and purchased "La Traviata". Since that day, I've watched opera, I have friends that enjoy opera and I have a considerable collection of opera CD's and old cassettes. With that being said, I'm not an erudite when it comes to opera, nor will I enjoy everything. But I was happy to see that Kolakowski included it in this book.

Maxim 20 is about "Follow Museums Like Others Follow Sports Teams". I find this true especially when engaging in conversations with artists who have embraced art worldwide. There is also a lot of name dropping about this museum and that museum, the technological use of Google Maps of Museums to which museum would you want to go or enjoyed? I've only been to a handful of museums in America but I try to keep up to date of other museums around the world that I would want to go to and why.

Maxim 24 is about "Include Art Films In Your Movie Collection". I highly agree with this! As there are conversations about books, politics and the state of society, I find myself in intellectual discussions about cinema. As Jean-Luc Godard has said, "Everything is Cinema" and it is true. You learn so much through cinema, about history, about books, about art... From the directors of Nouvelle Vague, learning about Italian Neorealism, Weimar cinema to German Expressionism, American cinema from the silents, slapstick comedy, film noir, Russian Cinema, Japanese cinema to Kurosawa, Ozu to Oshima and more. It's very good to know your cinema and before it was quite expensive to purchase Criterion Collection, Kino or Masters of Cinema DVD's or Blu-rays but fortunately, you can find foreign cinema through Netflix and Hulu.

Maxim 51 is about "Become a Foodie Like a Roman Emperor". I grew up with a grandfather who cooked Italian food but was raised with eggs, spam and corn beef and whatever was sold by McDonald's, Burger King, KFC and Denny's. I can eat food but never understood food. But in this Internet age of Yelp and Food Channel, I found myself going to restaurants with friends, spending money on expensive dishes to trying dishes from different ethnicities. My friends are foodies to the point that after they eat, they must blog about it and type their experience on their cell phone. While it's great being a foodie, it's also a pain in the arse as one would have to spend a lot of money daily or at the grocery store or specialized store for ingredients.

But these are a few of the examples you can find in Nick Kolakowski's "How to Become an Intellectual: 100 Mandatory Maxims to Metamorphose into the Most Learned at Thinkers". There is a lot that one can learn from this book about how to become an intellectual or just be amused of what is featured..some that make sense and some that are interesting.

Sure, in some ways it is quite vain and some people may raise their eyebrows and not care about the things that are featured in this book. But if you have a personal disdain towards these things to begin with, this book is not for you.

Divinely Hilarious!

How to Become an Intellectual - 100 Mandatory Maxims is a must read. This refreshing take on intellectuals features belly laughs on each page along with morsels of truth and great advice! If you'd like to know which books to carry around to make you look smart, or which operas you should familiarize yourself with, look no further. I've greatly enjoyed reading Nick Kolakowski's views on appearing intellectual to peers - what kind of jokes to tell, what type of internet signature to have, how to sign a signature for the greatest impact, all great advice to put one ahead of the masses on the scale of intellect.

Each little chapter has a theory and then an example of how to put the theory into practice and then each theory and practice has the inevitable footnote. He covers each subject in a funny, exhilarating way and provides much food for thought as well as tidbits of facts to grow the brain. Each page of this book is a treat. Read it when you need a little pick me up or when you feel you could use some advice after making an unforgivable social blunder in front of the smarties at work. You'll soon feel refreshed and ready to go and put some of these theories into practice. I haven't found the time to choose an instrument to play but I have given thought to pulling out the old jacket with the worn elbows and have decided to choose my jokes wisely and I try not to quote Shakespeare or succumb to the temptations of using Latin phrases too often.

Great book, well written, refreshing and very clever. I am leaving this book around the house so others can absorb the knowledge and become more intellectual to keep up with me.

Lightweight and Fun Guide to Intellectual Etiquette

How to Become an Intellectual: 100 Mandatory Maxims to Metamorphose into the Most Learned of Thinkers by Nick Kolakowski is amusing and entertaining. Divided into dozens of two and three page maxims covering a wide range of topics. Here you will find advice on such things as choosing your intellectual role model, knowing the basic chess moves, and being wary of spell check. Each maxim states the main point, discusses how to put it into practice, and ends with a usually humorous footnote.

The book is really a guide to etiquette for those that want to leave the favorable impression of an intellectual person when interacting with others. Resist the temptation to show off, whether it's your cell phone, your alma mater, or your Latin. Be engaging and courteous by being polite, losing a debate graciously, and making dinner fun. This book has lots of good advice - and some amusing fluff.

I find the Introduction extremely convincing, lucid, learned, fair to past scholarship, and truly illuminating about the meaning of tragedy in general and about the very specific acceptions of hamartia, katharsis, ekplêxis, and thauma, in the context of an appropriate understanding of the Poetics. Another remarkable feature is the dexterity and ease with which it draws on all the relevant parts of the Aristotelian corpus to shed light on troublesome textual passages in the Poetics. Finally, the style of the Introduction is straightforward, free of unnecessary jargon, direct, and economical, the best interpretation of the Poetics I ever read.

“The translations of Joe Sachs are a great gift to Greekless amateurs like me. He uses simple, unambiguous words joined into sentences that are often complex, as they must be to be accurate, but always clear (after sufficient attention has been paid). A stylist may find some awkwardness in the hyphenated compound words and the noun clauses he prefers to the polysyllabic Latinate words often found in English versions of Aristotle. But these blunt locutions — along with Sachs’ excellent notes — manage to convey both the richness of meaning and the clarity of thought of their Greek antecedents. It introduces the crucial concepts of mimesis ('imitation'), hamartia ('error') and katharsis, which have informed serious thinking about drama ever since. It examines the mythological heroes, idealized yet true to life, whom Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides brought on to the stage. And it explains how the most effective plays rely on complication and resolution, recognitions and reversals. Essential reading for all students of Greek literature and of the many Renaissance and post-Renaissance writers who consciously adopted Aristotle as a model, the Poetics is equally stimulating for anyone interested in theatre today.

5 star translation, 3 star commentary: 4.5 overall

I ordered this particular translation of the Poetics for a two-person reading group. The other member recommended it for the translation and this being my first reading of the whole text I was happy to go along. In the end it was a fine choice for the translation, but the commentary comes along with it and I couldn't leave it out of my review completely.

First, the translation:
No nits to pick here. It is very clear and readable. This isn't Aristotle at his most refined, but the translation should be accesible to anyone with the interest in reading it. Halliwell hasn't shied away from the overtly normative language that permeates the text, nor has he attempted to inject more structure or content than the text can bear.

Given that the commentary is (apparently) geared to folks with an interest in contemporary aesthetics, it is nice to see that Halliwell has not colored the text in a way that might be more palatable to the contemporary aesthetician. A few passages sent me scrambling for the OCT, but I always ended up happy with Halliwell's rendering.
Two notes: 1) Halliwell has opted for "mimesis" and "mimetic" throughout. This is a case of a philosophical concept in transliteration rather than translation, but probably ought to be. This choice, and a few others, make the text more appropriate for the academically minded, though the Poetics might not be leisurely reading anyhow...and 2) Halliwell's translation does not include Bekker pages nor numbers. Chapter breaks are included but are of limited usefulness for reference to the OCT, etc.

Then, the commentary:
I should admit that I am not the target audience for Halliwell's commentary. I would be an embarrassingly bad classicist, if I were to claim to be one...and I am not independently interested in contemporary aesthetics. That being the case, the commentary might be quite useful for other readers. Halliwell raises interesting points quite often and points up tensions in Aristotle's view writ large, but often misses the trees for the forest. Late in the book, admittedly where the lack of book II is most glaring, Aristotle introduces new machinery or recalls distinctions hastily made. Halliwell is silent here, perhaps because he just isn't interested in this fine-grained a reading...but that seems like just what a commentary ought to be interested in. One major issue is that the commentary occasionally reads like an argumentative essay - an argument for Halliwell's reading - but doesn't seem particularly well argued. Early assumptions are taken for granted in later chapters, etc.
Since I am almost positive that Halliwell has other folks in mind, and since my interests might be especially idiosyncratic anyway, I have tried not to let my thoughts on the commentary cloud the overall review...

The bottom line: if you're looking for just a translation of the Poetics, this won't disappoint. I can't compare it directly to other translations, but it is accesible and I didn't find much to quibble with when I turned to the OCT. The commentary isn't, and doesn't pretend to be, a concentrated analysis of the philosophical framework on offer. It is an interesting essay on the development of aesthetics, the bridge between Aristotle and contemporary thinkers, and is probably quite full of material that would interest classicists and aestheticians. I can't really fault the commentary for having a different aim than I had hoped, and one need not refer to it besides.

For the student of Aristotle, someone interested in aesthetics and wanting to read this foundational treatise, or someone interested in the history of philosophy (or thinking in general), I think this translation will certainly meet your needs.

Exceptional Translation, Preface, Notes, etc. BUY THIS VERSION!

Extremely well translated, explained and expounded. So much so that I had to stop my reading and come write this review.

I first read "Aristotle's Poetics" by S. H. Butcher and Francis Fergusson; an absolutely terrible translation.

Then I read "The Art of Poetry" by Ingram Bywater (a free translation of Aristotle's Poetics). It has a decent preface, but the translation was crabbed and stilted (although better than the one above).

After reading everything I could find online concerning The Poetics (Wikipedia, Spark Notes, Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, etc.) the material was still floating around a bit vaguely in my mind. So I decided to purchased this latest translation and read the original again.

This translation is the one that should be in classrooms and read by screenwriters, etc. etc.

This is comparable to the NIV translation of the Bible as contrasted with the KJV. First time readers of the Poetics should begin here.

I bought this because Aaron Sorkin said it was one of his favorite books on writing. I expected dense and it is but not in the way I imagined. It's also clever and interesting and in an odd way comforting to know these writing principles are ancient and true-- true in the way of hitting their mark. However, a practical guide on writing this is not, you have to sift through it to find what applies to your writing. Not sure I agree with Sorkin, but glad to have read it. Plus, now I can sound sooooooo cerebral when I tell people I read this.

It Wasn't Just in Salem

Everyone knows about the witchcraft trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Few people know as much about them as John Demos, a professor of history who has written academic texts on the theme and about early American history. Demos explains that after writing _Entertaining Satan_ in 1982, he thought he had said his last about the history of witchcraft. "Yet the talk-show invitations kept coming each year at Halloween; there was still the occasional witchcraft conference to attend; there were even middle-of-the-night phone calls from people who thought themselves possessed by the Devil." So when he was invited to write a synthesis of the subject, he had reasons to take on the project, although he had been used to writing about specific cases from centuries ago, and doing so for an academic audience. _The Enemy Within: 2,000 Years of Witch-Hunting in the Western World_ (Viking) is the result, and while it inevitably covers the witch scare in New England, the longer view has to do with the larger pattern of blaming and scapegoating. People have done this for centuries, and although we might congratulate ourselves for graduating from the magical, supernatural thinking that brought forth the Salem trials, we are still demonizing. Demos's chapters are a set of historic essays on important themes, and his broad outlook on the subject is well-reasoned and fascinating.

Christianity developed a tolerance, even a complicity, to witch-magic. Sorcerers, usually women, might be despised or condemned, but they were also respected and consulted especially to work a bit of counter-magic against some curse large or small. Spells and charms were thought effective in battling against a mystifying world, and the church had similar remedies. Christians, for instance, used sacred relics to promote cures or they valued charms such as medallions made from paschal candles. By the end of the fourteenth century, the disarray from wars and plague, an increased emphasis on Satan as a foil to Christ, and inquisitorial investigations with the acceptance of torture to gain evidence all brought increased attention to witches. Demos devotes a chapter to the famous _Malleus Maleficarum_, first published in 1486, a guide to what witches do and how to catch them out. Pope Innocent VIII himself supported the book, which showed it was heresy not to believe in witches and their connection to the Devil, listed the leading forms of witchcraft and what witches did, and advised how to get evidence against them, including torturing them to get the truth. Demos summarizes the famous events at Salem, with a specific chapter on one of the chief participants, Cotton Mather. The Puritan minister was preoccupied with witches partly because they fitted into his vision of the imminent millennium and return of Christ, and he encouraged the Salem prosecutions. As society began to doubt the wisdom of the witch trials, so Mather lessened his emphasis on the scourge, but for him, to stop believing in witches would have been to stop believing in God, for the beliefs were closely linked. He even came to reconsider the trials years later, after they had hung their victims, and to regret what had happened and the errors that had been made. Unlike some others involved, however, he made no apology.

We don't persecute witches anymore like Mather wanted to, but in his final section, Demos shows that the persecution continues. It isn't for nothing that McCarthyism is called witch-hunting. The analogy was most sharply drawn in Arthur Miller's drama _The Crucible_ in 1952; Miller had researched the historic Salem trials before writing his play, which Demos commends for its accuracy in the depiction of the atmosphere of that time, and for enhancing the power of the term witch-hunting. Demos points out analogies (and differences) in the witch-hunting of other forms and other eras, like the anti-Masonry scares, the persecution of the Bavarian Illuminati, and others. A final chapter shows witch-hunting in a scary modern form, the child care sex-abuse crisis of only the past couple of decades. Accused of Satanism and crimes against children, operators of the Fells Acres Day School, for instance, were convicted and sentenced to up to forty years of prison, serving some years before the sentences were overturned. Demos cites day-care stories of rituals, a prosecutorial compulsion for punitive retribution, coercive or suggestive questioning of children, and a refusal to accept victims' denials as the same sort of processes involved at Salem. The ancient witch enemy is with us still.

Woman as Evil

I heard a radio interview with Yale historian & Prof. John Demos when this book first came out and bought it later that day. I was not disappointed. What literally blew me away was a significant piece of history I was unaware of, the chapter "Malleus Maleficarum," or "Hammer on Evildoers" [witches]. ( "Maleficarum" is the feminine version of "evil-doers" whereas "Maleficorum" is the masculine.)
"Malleus" is a treatise written by two Inquisitors of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church, Kramer & Sprenger and endorsed in 1484 by the papal bull of Pope Innocent VIII. The first index was again produced in 1559 under Pope Paul IV. Women were said to have "insatiable carnal lust" and "sex with the Devil," were "prone to demonic temptations because of their many weaknesses," and "had the power to steal men's penises," "killed babies" and "ate human flesh." This widespread publication, the creation of which coincided with the Gutenberg Press, spread throughout Europe like a plague, creating mass hysteria, tortures, and executions that lasted for centuries.
Certainly Demos' book is an in-depth and all-inclusive account of witchcraft from the dark ages to the modern day; including the Salem witch trials, the Freemasons, and the McCarthy era.
"The enemy" is seen as the woman, usually old, widowed, or one who stands out from the social "norm" and causes discomfort. A witch-hunt, by Demos' definition, finds women who represent something unsettling to society and punishes or kills them to rid society of its ills.
Demos' broad outlook on the subject is fascinating. Highly recommended.

The term "witch hunt" is used metaphorically today to describe all sorts of attempts by communities to rid themselves of elements deemed "evil", whether those elements are communists, child abusers, or heretics. People do not like what they do not understand, and crises, be they epidemics, wars, terrorists, or waves of immigrants, they tend to band together to find someone to blame, along with a way to expel that threat. In The Enemy Within, respected historian John Demos shows, in the first part of the book, how and why early western societies persecuted and executed suspected witches, examining the sociological factors that led to the panic. In the second part, he deals with contemporary society, in which we view ourselves as scientifically informed and free of superstition, yet persist in the ancient drive to identify and purge the causes of our deepest anxieties. Hard times seem to revive our collective fears, and the challenge is to avoid lapsing into the old, destructive, reactionary patterns. Written for the general reader, The Enemy Within is a potent reminder to remember how near to the surface the patterns remain, and to strive to find intelligent solutions to the very real problems that we face today.

Kindle version not updated from first edition

I just bought this for my Kindle and the download was smooth, unlike the experience of another reviewer. I decided to buy the Kindle version because I really liked the 'first' edition(2001) of the book.
The book has a lot of great information on teaching EFL, but the Kindle edition(2012) has not been updated. Except for the introduction, this 'new' edition is practically a word-for-word replica of the first edition. Therefore, if you have the first edition, you don't need to purchase the Kindle version.

An excellent read.

A thorough and untainted look into one heck of a scary set of circumstances. Excellent photos to go with the descriptions the witnesses give and also of the places where all the action took place. No grammatical errors, no "filler", no redundant information and most importantly no bs. (Personally I was very pleased with this purchase despite the rather high price and found it in the end to be worth every penny. I hope Mr.Feschino derives a profit from his hard work and determination to get to the bottom of yet another government cover up.)

The final word on the Flatwoods (Braxton County) Monster.

The author should be recognized for providing the most detailed, accurate, and up to date information regarding this case. If you have heard of this case over the years, I would forget what you already heard. Chances are, you received at least some (if not all) erroneous information. Something definitely happened that night. And to think that many eye witnesses saw a standard barn owl and confused it with a giant lizard/robot creature is ludicrous. I highly recommend this book.
