Great Content but dissappointed with Kindle Version

The content is thorough and very detailed. However it's difficult to go back and review various sections because the Kindle version does not have a table of contents. It's 384 pages with no way to at least visually keep track of what section begins and ends where. That's really annoying and that's the reason I'm only giving it 3 stars. The inconsistencies with Kindle books is really beginning to be a pain. In fact, I think this will be my last Kindle purchase.

Awesome Book on Lead Gen

This book is really comprehensive. It includes all of the latest strategies and tips for lead generation, including social media, content marketing, and SEO. I haven't found a more complete book anywhere to date! It is great for beginners, but also has information for more advanced marketers as well.

Eminently Readable

Good historians must master the tools of the researcher, interviewer, and storyteller. A tall task to be sure, and you can have no better guide than How to Write History that People Want to Read by Ann Curthoys and Ann McGrath, an eminently readable primer which offers practical advice on how to prepare for library visits, conduct audio and video interviews, and write a compelling narrative.

Easy to read, intelligent how-to guide

How to Write History that People Want to Read is one of those enjoyable, professional books that does exactly what its title promises. In this instance, Ann Curthoys and Ann McGrath cover the things you should consider when writing history-from research in far flung places to dealing with criticism. They offer sensible advice on structure and style-and their own style is extremely readable.

From my reading, the book started off welcoming and encouraging everyone to write history (be it a privately published family history book, a textbook or a blog), but then gradually focussed in on people in academia-namely students. I imagine history students would find it a useful guide.

Twenty years ago I was a history student. These days I write steampunk instead. Steampunk is history with a twist. It is part technological invention (steam) and part social critique (punk). So when I was reading How to Write History that People Want to Read I was doing so from the perspective of someone who researches history to purposely skew its retelling.

There is a lot of similarity in how I construct my fictional world, and Ann Curthoys and Ann McGrath's advice for historians: use the five senses, develop characters, hone your own style, and so on.

But what intrigued me was their discussion of historians' moral position. Ethics in history (in anything) fascinates me. It's one of the reasons I enjoy writing fiction: the exploration of good and evil. In steampunk, the social critique can be the reason for the story. Forcing the reader to the point where they have to make a moral judgement is what powerful fiction does-even if readers experess their experience of it as "I love/hate the book".

This thread of critiquing the here and now by telling a story of the past is a theme throughout How to Write History that People Want to Read. This is historians-as-activists and it's not a role everyone's comfortable with. But being aware of why you write is a challenge all authors ought to accept.

How to Write History that People Want to Read is an interesting way to look behind the scenes and see how your favourite history books and journal, websites and television shows come into being.

Not just for historians

Very much enjoyed this book, very helpful advice for anyone writing non-fiction that has a historical element, especially academics. While written by Australians, the advice is universal. I especially liked their checklist for what to being keeping an eye out for after you have written a manuscript but before you send it off to publishers or reviewers. I have bought two additional copies for friends, one a historian of economics, one a historian of psychology. And I find myself revisiting my copy of the book as I write a journal article. Excellent.

It was very informative and the illustrations were very helpful. I recommend this book for anyone needing supplemental information pertaining to utility work.

About the Author
Donna Kay (formerly Donna Ulmer) is Assistant Professor of Accounting and Accounting Information Systems at Maryville University in Saint Louis, Missouri, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate accounting. Dr. Kay earned B.S. and MBA degrees from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville before receiving a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, where she conducted action research on the perceived effectiveness of instructional techniques in the computer classroom. Named to Who s Who Among American Women, Dr. Kay holds certifications as both a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) and is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Missouri Society of CPAs, the American Accounting Association and the Missouri Association of Accounting Educators. Dr. Kay serves on the Information Technology Committee of the MSCPA.

Attention to detail

The book was easy and quick to read, however, the diagrams had typos within them. Some of the arrows were wrong (backwards/double sided when they should be single/etc.). My class was tested on the placement and direction of the arrows, so learning the correct placement was difficult. This is a small detail that should have been paid more attention to before publishing the book.

Dry and boring... but Great information

I rented this book from Amazon instead of purchasing it because of the big price difference. Sometimes I get skeptical of text books because they are such hit or miss items as far as teaching students the material. This book alone will not be enough. However, it is a great introduction into learning more about the processes of information systems and understanding the importance of them in the business world. Yes, it's dry and boring. Yes, it's required for school. However, the ability to comprehend and understand this material will be the difference between someone who moves up in the business world and someone who stays stagnant. (not bashing anyone who is happily stable).

It's worth looking at and paying attention to if it's required for school. Double it up with a good book about the processes of other database systems or microsoft access, and the material can really blow your mind once you find real world applications for it.

Good stuff!

An exciting and useful book, combining personal experience with well-selected excerpts from decades of the prior works of foresight leaders. Taking notes is hard because every page includes multiple things I'm tempted to write down. Maree is one of the most respected futurists in the world and this book is a great contribution to this important field.

I was just revisiting this page to confirm the publication date but once here I thought: I am so appreciating this book, I should post a review! It's really good.

She also discovers a sickly young cousin, Colin, who has been shut away in a hidden Manor room. Together Mary and Dickon help Colin blossom, and in the process Mary finds her identity and melts the heart of her emotionally distant uncle. Bailey makes fluid transitions between the voices and accents of various characters, from terse Mrs. Medlock and surly groundskeeper Ben to chipper housemaid Martha. One of my favorite books

I read this a couple times when I was a young teenager and now I just read it again 10 years later. It is still one of my favorite books. I love the theme that children need activities and hobbies and exercise to stay healthy, physically and mentally. I wish I had my own secret garden inside a stone wall :)
I think this is a wonderful book for any young child to read. The characters are good and the story is so beautiful.

Children's Classic

For those of you who haven't read this, you should.

It's the story of Mary Lennox, who grew up in India, extremely spoiled by the servants, whose only job was to keep her quiet and out of the way of her parents. After her parents die she's sent to live with her uncle in England, a crotchety old man mourning the loss of his wife, who also wants nothing to do with her. Lonely, spoiled Mary explores the manor and the garden, finding all sorts of hidden secrets as well as her own happiness.

A must-read for children and adults. It's the kind of story that just makes you feel warm and comfortable inside.

One of the most wonderfully illustrated versions of the Secret Garden

I just received this glorious book. I have many renditions of the Secret Garden. This luxuriously, lovely book is filled with superb illustration that really captures the mood and era of the story, which is the early 1900's. There are so MANY illustrations, Inga Moore has created a painting for nearly every page! A really lovely addition to a collection or to share with your children. If you enjoy the artwork in this book, buy "The Wind in the Willows" also illustrated by Inga Moore .Simply wonderful!
In case you are unfamiliar with the story, it is the tale of a peevish, spoiled and sullen orphan girl, MARY LENOX, who comes to live in the home of her mysterious and emotionally distant uncle. She meets her sickly cousin, Colin, a young boy, hidden away from the world and convinced he is dying. Hidden behind a huge stone wall is a Secret Garden which is discovered by the girl,Mary; a garden as neglected and in need of care as these two children. As they bring the garden back to life, they bring themselves back to life as well, discovering joy and friendship in an enchanting and wonderful way. It really is a classic.

As well as obtaining access to Epstein's unpublished correspondence, Geller has rounded-up an impressive array of former chauffeurs, attorneys, employees, and ex-Beatles to tell their tales of the shy salesman who chanced upon a scruffy quartet in a Liverpool cellar, and went on to help them conquer the world. Particularly illuminating are the details of Epstein's business deals: "I think ... Brian did good deals," Paul McCartney says. "He looked to his dad for business advice, and his dad really knew how to run a furniture store in Liverpool. This was a little bigger than that!"

Back then, the full impact of the Beatles was impossible to foresee--but, when it finally did come, it was immense and immediate. A month before he died, at only 34, Epstein wrote of his beloved charges: "The boys have gone to Greece to buy an island. I think it's a dotty idea, but they're no longer children and must have their own sweet way." Brian Epstein's death by drug overdose in 1967 cut short a career marked by scandalous secrets and phenomenal success. As manager, Epstein cleaned up the Beatles, gave them cute haircuts and promoted them tirelessly, telling anyone who would listen that they would be "bigger than Elvis" until, surprisingly, they were. Born to an upper-middle-class Jewish household and pushed into joining the family business, Epstein transformed his father's furniture store first into the best music store in Liverpool, then into a music empire. All the while, he struggled with loneliness and unhealthy relationships, forced to hide his homosexuality from the public and always insecure about the motivations of others. An untapped vein in Beatles literature

I agree with the earlier reviewer's incredulous comments about the cover of this book. If the publisher wanted to make browsers think twice about a purchase, they've done it.
But despite the cheesy cover, I went ahead with my purchase & was not disappointed. One would think that just about every aspect of the Beatles has been absolutely covered and trampled to death. Then along comes Debbie Geller with this gem - the Brian Epstein angle has been an untapped vein up until this point. It's not so much a traditional book about her subject as it is an oral history. Geller's coup is to get Paul McCartney - among many other voices - to comment at length on Epstein's role with the group.
The book's main themes and premises, of which a strong case is made by all the book's participants:
1. There would be no Beatles without Epstein. During the very early sixties when they were no more than a crude band distinguished only by their Hamburg experience, Epstein's belief in 'his boys' was indefatigable. He created a new image for them, and sold that image - after much rejection - to London.
2. Epstein created rock and roll management and promotion as we know it today; it simply did not exist before he came along, & it is around today mainly in the guise that he created.
3. Epstein was a terribly complex and conflicted man. No one participating in this project makes the case that he was 'nice' or easy to get along with. In fact, he comes across as a holy terror at times. Jewish in a non-Jewish world, openly gay prior to any societal openness on that front, a manic-depressive (some posit) before a clinical diagnosis for such an afflication existed, addicted to various uppers and downers.
This was a terribly complex, troubled - but enormously gifted - man. To think that he fit all he did into 32 short years. Amazing.
Thank you Debbie Geller for honoring this blazing comet named Brian Espstein, who willed the Beatles into this world.

Surprisingly Enlightening

Even after reading Bob Spitz' encyclopedic, "The Beatles," this collection of BBC interviews by those who knew Brian Epstein best comes across as fresh. There's not much narrative here. Almost everything comes from transcribed quotes off a TV documentary. But the sources are perfect: Paul McCartney, Derek and Alistair Taylor, Sid Bernstein, and assorted chauffers, gofers, lawyers and business people who worked with and knew Brian Epstein as well as that enigmatic gay man of the uptight 50s and early 60s could be known. Way ahead of his time, Epstein is seen as inventing the modern rock star, an astonishing feat for a record store clerk from Liverpool, albeit a well educated, rich one. Epstein screwed up the Beatles' merchandising deals, yes, but don't weep too much over that. They went on to make quite a few quid after all. The odd thing is Epstein never really liked this type of music. Sibelius was his 'desert island' music of choice. Maybe that helped him see his job more clearly. This is an illuminating bio well worth reading if you are even just a casual Beatles historian.
