Great book on using liquid emulsions

I find this to be a very thorough book on using silver gelatin/liquid emulsions. It covers everything from coating papers, fabrics, or other materials for photo printing, as well as making glass negatives. There is also info on various toning methods, a troubleshooting section, and a formulary with recipes for everything from developers, fixers, stop baths, and toners. It also tells you how to make your own emulsions if you prefer that over buying ready-made emulsions.

There are also a lot of nice images of creative applications in the book to help inspire you.

The only book that shows you how to create luxurious Colefax & Fowler interiors in miniature. 'The Yellow Drawing Room' is a superb variant of Nancy Lancaster's famous, full-scale classic. If you like stately English houses, this book is a Must. Not a book for beginners.

A Must for the Do-It-Yourself Miniaturist

Jessica Ridley has miniatures in her genes. After all, her grandfather was the designer and builder of Queen Mary's Dollhouse. :-) She is a miniaturist and faux painting artist who incorporates her specialty in her projects, giving the reader alternatives to the usual approach to dollhouse decorating -- namely siding for the exterior and wallpaper for the interior.
She teaches techniques for faux finishes, customizing and building furniture and accessories, as well as using interesting and unusual materials. The instructions are illustrated with plenty of color photographs, so you can see how the project looks at the different stages.
I highly recommend this book because I think that it stirs up your creative juices and inspires the miniaturist to try something new and personalized in their projects, while at the same time saving money. Who could ask for more!

Smith clearly states the goals of each chapter. Starting with an introduction to the concept of web-based instruction, she then discusses the types of web-based library instruction and the designing and development cycle; selecting project development tools, including software and hardware; designing the user interface; using multimedia; introducing interactivity; and evaluation and testing. Smith's book focuses on preproduction, the most important stage of any web project, but it also provides a good overview of web technology in general (even though it's not intended as an HTML guide) and contains useful tips obviously garnered from years of experience. Good "face to face" library instruction will never be replaced, and, as the author states, web-based instruction is not for everyone. However, this method can be used to either enhance traditional library instruction or reach nontraditional audiences, such as those with limited language skills and distance education constituencies. Still Waiting for the Definitive Zeppelin Biography

This book is so atrocious on so many levels it’s hard to know where to begin. There was obviously no editor whatsoever, substantively or stylistically. Wall is prone to endless run-on, syntactically awkward, paragraph-long sentences set off by dashes, containing a jumble of ideas and subjects. A sentence will start off being about one thing and end up being about something completely different, as if he has literary ADD. Dangling modifiers abound. It’s brutal to try to read. It actually took me four months to finish this book, no exaggeration. I could only stand a few pages at a time before I had to put it down out of sheer exhaustion—call it dazed and confused. As far as those silly passages where he “gets in the heads” of the subjects, I just skipped over them entirely.

The substance is little better. I never thought I’d defend Hammer of the Gods, but that book runs circles around this drivel. Stephen Davis may be a hack, but he knows how to write an entertaining read. And although he is accused of sensationalism, he actually put a lot in there about the music-making, and most of all, the Zeppelin live experience. There is little of that here. Wall drones on and on about things nobody cares about except him, like the album artwork, or Aleister Crowley and occult secret societies, or Black Sabbath, mostly everything except Led Zeppelin and their music. These things are part of the Zeppelin story and are discussed in HOTG, but not in such unnecessary detail. His biggest sin, in my book, is his failure to put us (especially those of us too young to remember) front and center at a Zeppelin concert at their zenith to experience it the way a concertgoer would have in 1972 or 1975. Davis, to his credit, did that. Even when Wall does talk about the music-making process, he gets bogged down in “this was taken from so-and-so, who took it from so-and-so, who took it…” Who cares that Jimmy Page wasn’t the first rock guitarist to use the violin bow? Does he claim to be? (One pearl, which I give him props for, is a passage where he details all the music Bob Dylan ripped off in his early career; since Zep is constantly bashed for this it was enlightening to read.)

But there was very little in here that was new to me. He borrows from HOTG and various tell-alls, rehashing all the lurid, tired tales. The only revelation was that John Paul Jones considered quitting the band in the mid-70s. I learned some things about Peter Grant and John Bonham I didn’t know (and would rather not). The only redeeming, distinguishing feature of this book is Wall’s interviews with the band and manager and insights into them post-Zeppelin. But even then, he bends over backwards to show he can still write critically about his subjects despite having personally befriended them. Okay we get it, you’re objective. For some unfathomable reason he devotes an entire chapter to the Knebworth concerts. Wall seems to see them as both an omen of Zeppelin’s demise, and an indicator of what he views as the band’s declining popularity because they couldn’t sell out the shows. This is one of many places where the book suffers from its Brit-centeredness. He doesn't seem to get (or doesn’t care) that if those concerts had been in America they would have been blowouts. Zeppelin’s popularity never declined in America, which is the country that “made” them and the only one that matters when it comes to any discussion of their impact.

I won’t even get into how obnoxiously annoying Wall’s final chapters are. There’s interesting detail about the reunion shows and failed attempts to stage a comeback tour (Wall seemed to be the only person in attendance who was unimpressed by the O2 show), but absolutely nothing about Zeppelin’s overarching legacy and influence on popular music. How do you author a biography of Led Zeppelin and not discuss this? (Instead, Wall bizarrely sees fit to allot space in the “epilogue” to an inconsequential anti-Zeppelin rant by Jack Bruce of Cream—huh???) HOTG, for all its sleaze, gave me a sense of where Zeppelin stood in the pantheon of rock music; there is no sense of that here. Wall could have been writing about any band. He curiously titled his book “When Giants Walked the Earth,” yet doesn’t explore what made them giants but rather gets bogged down in personality conflicts and various minutiae. Wall clearly wrote about what he wanted to write about, not what readers—especially American fans--would want to read about. I hate to keep coming back to HOTG, but this book really suffers by comparison, and that’s no easy feat. It’s just a self-indulgent mess masquerading as a “serious” biography by an “insider.”

Solid biography mired by lengthy tangential occult sections

The good: One of the only well researched complete biographies on the band. The author had band access and in particular spoke a lot with Jimmy Page. The crazy stories are there as well as good details of recording and touring. Overall it is a very entertaining book in some ways. Unfortunately for me it has one deep very odd flaw.

The bad: The author appears to take the occult very seriously. Not just a handful of pages but rather over fifty are dedicated to Page and the occult. Long sections are presented on Aleister Crowley well beyond what is necessary or desired. The author also gave far too much time to occultic fringe associates of Page, who in retrospect may have influenced Page's private life, but had nothing to do with the band. Not a single hint of scepticism is applied to the occult sections. Other books including Case's bio of Page demonstrates that since the 1970's Page has pretty much disowned occult practices and likely views his past belief in the occult and magic with at minimum great skepticism. I tend to think think that Wall's possible personal sympathies towards the occult may have caused him to make it seem more important for Zeppelin than it ever was.

Overall a decent book but one flawed by an unequal over length treatment of the occult in relation to Jimmy Page. Wall unfortunately takes something tangential to the story and makes it far more central than necessary. Still at $9.99 on kindle it is worth a read for a fan.

Great band, tedious writer

The only reason I am giving this book three stars is because the story of Led Zeppelin is interesting on its own. Wall does a decent job of showing their rise, crash, and aftermath, but bogs the whole thing down with his tedious writing style. I found myself skipping all the sections where he writes from the perspective of each band member and Peter Grant in first person. And I did the same thing during the cumbersome Aleister Crowley "intermission." Unfortunately, his romanticization of the dark arts, his obvious disdain for Robert Plant, and his need to constantly remind his readers that, yes, indeed, he knows the band personally soured me on "When Giants Walked the Earth" and I found myself skimming it by the end. I will say that I enjoyed the sections where he talks about their creative process when they were making albums, but again that had less to do with Mick Wall than with Led Zeppelin themselves and Jimmy Page's wide roaming imagination. Proceed with caution.

Third and best of the Triple Trouble series.

Fallon is the third triplet in this series - albeit the firstborn (by several minutes). Since their twenty fifth birthday last summer, both Kayla and Elissa (twice) have married; now the three of them are planning a Christmas resort vacation over Christmas on St Alicia island in the Caribbean. The school where Fallon is a teacher has closed for the Christmas vacation, so she decides to go to the island early and relax. A very active person, she quickly becomes bored. Then, while relaxing on the beach, she spots a bottle floating in the water in front of her. When she picks it up, she is surprised to find a note in it - from a lonely little girl. She decides to try to find the little girl; she is obviously on the island, since she has drawn a map showing her location on the back of the note. Her inquiries at the resort provide no real help - the staff are very aware of the location, the owner of their chain of hotels lives there - but they have no knowledge of a little girl.
She decides to walk to the location the next morning in an effort to find the little girl.
This is my favorite of the Triple Trouble series. It is a reissue, but reflects Susan Mallery's touch in the writing, the characters, and the mix of mystery, romance, and humor. Be prepared for one of the bet Christmases of your life!

Each of Mallery's books has a great story featuring people that have challenges to overcome, as well as just a bit of sex which makes you want to pick up the book as soon as you can throughout the day as well as right after dinner!

Nicholas von Hoffman's most recent book is Citizen Cohn. Mr. von Hoffman began his writing career as a newspaperman in Chicago and is also the author of Mississippi Notebook, Make-Believe Presidents, and Organized Crimes.

Was there... did that

As one of the lead characters in this story, I was quite taken with the veracity of my performance. Nick did an amazing amount of leg work over the course of the summer, based initially on people I introduced him to. He pursued many paths of interest and covered a substantial amount of territory. The narrative, as described elsewhere, had as much structure as the situation itself allowed, which was really very little. The Haight-Ashbury was about things happening. Things, in this milieu, were not particularly planned, beyond setting a temporal framework and attempting to provide events for the framework, or just letting the events take over and flow where they would. As a followup, Stuart Loomis and the White Rabbit have recently been in contact by email as a result of a documentary on the period broadcast on PBS. Kelly avoided Vietnam and spent many years as a roady for rock and roll bands. He disappeared from view in the early eighties. Nick himself has spent a number of years recently working on plays for the stage, after a long successful career at the Washington Post. The White Rabbit gave up on the idea of pursuing a medical career and is a senior executive in Information Technology.

The Real Thing

This is the book that really explains what went on in San Francisco in 67. Von Hoffman does a wonderful job of telling the scene how it was. Ifyou want to understand hippies of the 60's read this book. It takes a different approach of the scene by not foccussing on anything, but covers everything. Von Hoffman did what most writers of the Acid era did or could not do; he was unbiased. The only down side was the strange organization. It had no chapters or real structure. Despite that fact, the book was very fluid.

Read this when I was in high school back in the day.

Must reading for anyone that lived thru the 60s. Notice I didn't say grew up in the 60s, LOL!

the best of its kind

Fine history.3 bulky volumes to deal with and maps spread out over the 3 volumes are the only drawbacks in my view.certainly if you can buy it for 70-80 (like i did) then dont miss out.

This book covers the careers of some of the leaders in the Abstract Expressionism movement(post WW2), but keeps the context of the movement by showing 169 illustrations(29 color) by a wide variety of pertinent artists and pieces.The down side to this book is the amount of black and white pictures in relation to the colour pictures. In a field of art that that is reliant on colour, this is a serious drawback to the longevity of this book as anything more than a really good resource.

Sorely disappointed

This book typifies an endemic problem in art history literature: there are a great many scholars with an encyclopaedic knowledge of their subject but who lack the pedagogic and technical skills needed to communicate it in written format. Mr. Anfam is obviously an authority on this most fascinating of art genres, but he is an absolutely terrible writer. I am an ardent fan of abstract expressionism but found the book difficult to finish because it was written so awkwardly. A second complaint regards not just this book but this entire series. The dearth of color plates is understandalbe in so inexpensive a book, but it is especially regrettable for a book covering so dynamic a subject matter. In summary, I would look elsewhere for an introduction to this genre: Mr. Anfam's writing does not do the subject justice.

Ideal intro to 20th century American art

David Anfam's Abstract Expressionism is as good an introduction to 20th century American art as you'll find anywhere. Whether you're a novice or an expert (I'm sort of inbetween) I think you're bound to find this book indispensable. Despite its concise length Abstract Expressionism manages to cover the subject in depth as well as breadth. Besides offering sharp insights into the classic work of Pollock, Newman, de Kooning etc more neglected artists, such as Lee Krasner and the photographer Aaron Siskind, are brought into the fold. The description of the pre-war origins of the New York School makes fascinating reading and helps you appreciate the high-point of Abstract Expressonism. There's not a single superfluous sentence in the book. That's not surpising as Anfam really knows his subject - it turns out he's also the author of the definitive work on Rothko, the brillliant Rothko Catalogue Raison�e. This book has me itching to get into the gallery and see the work - and for an art book you can't say better than that. It's just a shame it's a 3,000 mile trip from London to MoMA - tate modern just won't do!
