Among his many publications, he is co-editor, with James H. Moor, of The Digital Phoenix: How Computers are Changing Philosophy (Blackwell, 1998) and CyberPhilosophy: The Intersection of Philosophy and Computing (Blackwell, 2002).

Simon Rogerson is Director of the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility and Professor of Computer Ethics at De Montfort University. He is a co-editor of the scholarly journal Information, Communication and Ethics in Society. Among other publications, he is the author of Ethical Aspects of Information Technology: Issues for Senior Executives (1998) and a co-author of Strategic Management Support Systems (1996).

Good collection

I am teaching Professional Practice in Computer Science and, as part of preparing for the course, I read several of the available texts. While I did not find anything compelling for the way I wanted to teach the course, I was impressed by Bynum's edited
collection. It covers a broad spectrum of ethics in the field and I was able to use it to help structure the class and individual lectures.

As with many collections, the papers/chapters vary in clarity and interest but overall this book serves as a good introduction to the foundations of computer and information system ethics (making the argument that the computer does add new, under-appreciated dimensions to classical ethics). The next time I teach the course I will be using an ethics textbook and Bynum's is right near the top when I consider what to adopt.

Can Europe prosper without the euro?

In 2010, the 2008 global financial crisis morphed into the “eurocrisis.” It has not abated. The 19 countries of Europe that share the euro currency―the eurozone―have been rocked by economic stagnation and debt crises. Some countries have been in depression for years while the governing powers of the eurozone have careened from emergency to emergency, most notably in Greece.

In The Euro, Nobel Prize–winning economist and best-selling author Joseph E. Stiglitz dismantles the prevailing consensus around what ails Europe, demolishing the champions of austerity while offering a series of plans that can rescue the continent―and the world―from further devastation.

Hailed by its architects as a lever that would bring Europe together and promote prosperity, the euro has done the opposite. As Stiglitz persuasively argues, the crises revealed the shortcomings of the euro. Europe’s stagnation and bleak outlook are a direct result of the fundamental challenges in having a diverse group of countries share a common currency―the euro was flawed at birth, with economic integration outpacing political integration. The Euro is Europe's Major Problem -

Today, many of the countries of Europe (France, Greece, Italy, Spain, U.K.) have an output/capita (adjusted for inflation) well below that prior to the 'Great Recession of 2008.'The Euro was supposed to enhance commercial ties, erode borders and foster a spirit of collective interest - partly through economies of scale and comparative advantage. But in the 17 years since that currency came into existence, it has instead reinvigorated conflicts and a spirit of distrust while making economic inequality worse and dividing Europe into adversarial debtor and creditor camps. Interest rates on Greek bonds and several other Eurozone countries has soared, peaking at 22.5% for Greece in 2012. The migrant crisis and terrorist threats have taken front stage - despite the euro supposedly bring about closer integration.

Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Lucas declared in 2003 that the 'central problem of depression prevention has been solved.' Market fundamentalists believe that if the government would simply ensure that inflation was low and stable, markets would ensure growth and prosperity for all - this is especially true within the Eurozone's dominant power, Germany. Greece is now in a depression, with half its youth unemployed, the extreme right has made large gains in France, a majority of those elected to Barcelona's regional parliament support independence from Spain, and large parts of Europe have a lower GDP/capita lower than before the 2008 global financial crisis. Even what Europe celebrates as a success is actually a failure - eg. Spain's unemployment rate has fallen from 26% in 2013 to 20% at the beginning of 2016 - but nearly half of young people remain unemployed and that would be even higher if so many young workers hadn't left to look elsewhere for jobs. Why?

Stiglitz's answer is that the 1992 Euro adoption failed provide support for the institutions that would make it work - specifically, the fault lies in currency pegs,' where the value of one country's currency is fixed relative to another or relative to a 'commodity.

Continuing, Stiglitz contends that our depression at the end of the 19th century was linked to the gold standard - with no new large discoveries of gold, its scarcity led to a fall in the prices of ordinary goods in terms of gold. This made it increasingly difficult for farmers in America to pay back their debts. The gold standard is also widely blamed for deepening and prolonging the Great Depression - those that abandoned the gold standard early recovered more quickly.

In spite of this, Europe decided to tie itself together with a single currency, creating within Europe the same kind of rigidity that the gold standard had inflicted on the world. Worse yet, the structure of the Eurozone built in certain ideas about what was required for economic success - that the central bank should focus on inflation, ignoring unemployment, growth, and stability as well, as does the Federal Reserve.

Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Spain, and Cyprus were also importing more than they were exporting, with the resulting insufficiency of domestic demand depressing the economy. One needed to make import-substituting activities more productive and encourage consumption of local goods. In Greece, for example, the opposite - Greece was ordered to change milk labeling so that 11-day-old milk from northern Europe could still be called 'fresh' and undercut Greek producers.

Why were Europe's leaders even focusing on milk, the size of loaves of bread, and what OTC drugs could be sold outside of pharmacies as Greece's GDP plummeted about 25%? Stiglitz observes that special interests, eg. big dairy companies of Holland, appear to be behind the reforms, and the chairman of the Eurogroup is the Dutch Finance minister. Stiglitz also notes that hardly any of the money loaned Greece went to help the Greeks, but rather private-sector creditors - German and French banks.

Germany holds itself out as a success - an example of what other countries should do. Its economy has grown by 6.8% since 2007 - just 0.8%/year, a number that normally would be considered close to failing. (The U.S. growth rate in the same period averaged 1.2%.) Stiglitz also points that prior to the crisis (early 2000s), Germany adopted reforms that aggressively cut into ordinary workers' safety net, especially those at the bottom. Inequality increased, and real wages stagnated. Germany is a 'success' only by comparison with other nations in the Eurozone. Regardless, its strategy cannot be universally followed - based in part on strong trade surpluses.

Stiglitz also contends that the European Central Bank's monetary policy and the macroeconomic policies imposed by the official creditors on crisis countries have been largely responsible for the economic damages done. Tightening monetary policy during the credit crunch following the 2008 crisis, along with the imposition of sharp fiscal deficit cuts threw the Eurozone into a self-inflected second recession in 2011-12. In Greece, for example, measures intended to lower the debt burden have left it more burdened than in 2010 - the debt-to-GDP ratio has increased from 117% when the crisis began to 177% today. Many Germans insist it was hyperinflation that led to Hitler, and so tend to support central bank policies that guard against that problem rather than the more worrisome spector of joblessness - thus, Germany is the problem, not Greece.

Sitglitz endorses significant debt write-downs, raising both taxes and spending by the same amount (Stiglitz blames a hidden agenda of downsizing government for the latter), and banning excessive trade deficits. Instead, he believes the Eurozone will further unravel. He also criticizes the European Common Bank for 'resisting quantative easing,' yet argues that the most important effect of QE has been contributing to 'growing inequality,' which he says hurts growth

Bottom-Line, per Stiglitz: The Euro has failed to achieve either of its two principal goals of prosperity and political integration. European countries now view each other with distrust and anger.

Broad clear and thoughtful, but biased

There are two Joseph Stiglitzes: the brilliant economist and the repetitive polemicist.

Unlike “The Price of Inequality,” a book wrapped by Stiglitz the rambling, Nobel-flashing celebrity blogger around the nucleus of a very incisive article written by Stiglitz the brilliant economist, this forward-planned, structured book is 100% the work of the brilliant economist. To be sure, he is starting to sound a lot like his alter ego, but the transformation is far from complete and what we have here is a genuinely exhaustive, if not amazingly deep, treatise that has a beginning, a middle and an end.

The book is divided in five sections (that are however grouped in four parts):

• First a “you are here” section that lays out the author’s views of where we stand and how we got here
• Second, a three-part expo on (i) how currency unions are meant to work, (ii) where the Euro diverges from this ideal and (iii) the (negative) role of the ECB
• Third, a long whine against the Troika’s work in Greece and (less so) Ireland
• Fourth, the Stiglitz manifesto of how to (semi-centrally, you have been warned!) run an economy, mischievously mis-branded “Creating a Eurozone that works”
• Fifth, a daring and provocative “what next” section

A quick read through chapter 9 (the manifesto) may be the best starting point for the reader. Read that and you will calibrate how much to the right you are of the author (or to the left for the 5% of the human population who are thus inclined). Agree or disagree, you are now reading the book with the author’s ideal world in mind and that’s how you will get the most out of it.

The bits I thought were unparalleled in the literature were the section entitled “Internal devaluations and external imbalances” (pp. 97 to 110) that nestles inside the already very strong chapter on “When can a single currency ever work,” the entire chapter on how the ECB was conceived, how it thinks and whom it serves (brilliant, brilliant) and the final section of the book that takes you through how we can go about executing on “more Europe” or “less Europe,” as opposed to muddling through to assured destruction.

That said, the final section will make your stomach turn if you are German, and you will be right to object. If Europe was the only economy on earth, I can see how perhaps Germany could pay its workers more / restrict its trade surplus / whatever. I’m not saying I buy it, I’m just saying I can see it. But it’s competing with Japan, China and South Korea, to say nothing of the US. Not Italy. Not Spain. Not even France any more. Most certainly not Greece. I’d say it has the most luxurious setup for its workers from all of its competitors. Hell, Angie picked up 20% of workers’ wage bills at the depths of the crisis to keep them employed. And the unions have board seats in most major employers, as often does the state. Stiglitz knows all this (and it bothers him when it comes to German companies buying Greek state assets, for example) but is selective about when he remembers it.

Also, the book sets the ambitious goal of explaining that Europe is suffering from poor policy design rather than from having muddled through too long without engaging in structural reform. This the author fails to do, entirely. The treatment of structural reforms is not worthy of a high-school essay.

I won’t even bother going into the arguments, just count the number of pages dedicated to looking at structural reforms and draw your conclusions.

But I’ll cite two examples where the author’s judgement on specifics is almost as awful as his judgement on macroeconomics is brilliant:

1. The author sides with the pharmacists in my country (full disclosure, my mom’s a Greek pharmacist) who are plainly one of many extractive agents in an economy that is full of extractive agents. Suffice it to say Greek pharmacists went on strike, citing the Hipporcratic oath, when the troika threatened to break their stranglehold on baby formula. You heard that right, it was (and may still be, I’ve stopped following) illegal for a supermarket in Greece to sell baby formula. You’ve got to pay up and buy it at the pharmacist. Just an example.

2. The author mentions more than once that George Papandreou was crusading against the press-owning oligarchs. Point of information: George Papandreou was a third-generation prime minister. Both his grandfather George and his father Andreas have served as prime minister, multiple times. Look it up on Wikipedia, some crazy percentage of the time since WWII the prime minister or the head of the opposition in my country was called Papandreou. If you think a political clan can maintain that position and not be in cahoots with the oligarchs you know nothing about Greece. You probably know nothing about planet earth. Or you are blinded a bit by your views, perhaps…

So this book is not without its foibles. Overall, however, it does a tremendous job of laying out a view and it is the only book currently in print that covers so many facets. And it is not afraid to shout from the rooftops that the emperor has no clothes.

It makes excellent background reading for my favorite book on the Euro, the one by the FT’s Martin Sandbu. Sandbu goes deep, and if you want the skinny on his “straw man” you’ve got it right here!

Hurry up and relax

Loretta LaRoche has an amazing ability to transform stress into laughter. I first saw one of Loretta's television specials about 15 years ago and it honestly changed my life. She taught me how to "lighten up" and to look at things in a way that would make me laugh instead of cry.
This book is just another fabulous example of Loretta's sound advice and ideas to help you live a happier and less stressful life. I loved her "party pants" story and have found myself retelling it to friends and family to make a point and make them laugh.
Loretta tells it like it is using loads of humor and memorable quotes throughout the entire book. If you need to learn how to reduce stress in your life, there isn't a more enjoyable way to do it than to read this book. Congratulations to Loretta for turning millions of frowns into laughter.

Loretta La Roche is my hero. I went to the library once and asked the librarian to give me everything she had on love, laughter and joy. That is the first day I brought Loretta home and I was so moved by her message I have been a devoted fan ever since. If someone I know seems a bit down, I will tell them they need a little dose of Loretta!

She makes me laugh till I cry. I wrote her a fan letter and she wrote back! I love this lady. She makes us laugh at our self! Whenever I hear the words, ta dah, I think of her!

I keep her book, Life is Short, Wear Your Party Pants on my night stand along with a few other well chosen books, to keep close to my heart. All her books are like reference books for me. There is a section in the back for notes and I have every inch of space completely covered. Every time I pick it up, I take something positive away with me.

Her humor delights me and sometimes, just hearing her voice (I have all her tapes) I automatically start Laughing ...which happens to be one of my favorite activities and according to Loretta it works wonders to lower your stress levels which increases your immune system and on and on!

I wish we had more people like her. Do yourself a favor and fill up your cart with whatever she has to sell, you will not regret it for a second! I own every single book, tape, cd, video and silly kit she has to offer....did I mention how much she makes me laugh?

She is one funny lady, and because of her, I wear my party pants all the time! Order her book today! Do not pass go or collect $200.

Realism vs Idealism

Does America Need a Foreign Policy? by Henry Kissinger was published in 2001, shortly before 9/11. In the current paperback edition, he has added an Afterword on 9/11 and terrorism. While the Afterword is helpful, what is remarkable is how relevant his pre-9/11 text remains in the post-9/11 world.

Kissinger's title question is purely rhetorical. Of course America needs a foreign policy. His point in the title appears to be that American foreign policy has too often been the subject of domestic political campaigns which are focused more on electing the next president than on the country's real, long-term interests. This is a theme that he shares with the late George Kennan.

Kissinger's text follows a straightforward outline: Suggestions for US foreign policy with regard to Europe, the Western Hemisphere, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Globalization, and "Peace and Justice". I'll say more on this topic below.

Throughout the text, Kissinger advocates his standard theme of realism versus idealism, as he did in his magnificent prior work, Diplomacy. As a brief example, he points out that a seemingly desirable goal such as the peaceful reunification of Korea may not be as desirable as it might seem at first glance. A unified Korea, he points out, would become a major economic, political, and military power in East Asia. A more robust Korea might be seen as a threat by Japan, thereby destabilizing the current US-Japanese-South Korean alignment. Seeing a unified Korea as a threat, Japan might be tempted to go nuclear and withdraw from its close ties with the US. Do we really want this?

The theme of realism versus idealism becomes particularly pronounced in the chapter on "Peace and Justice". Kissinger's point here is that the basis for diplomacy established by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) was that the governments of the European powers agreed to:

* Deal with other governments as the sole, legitimate diplomatic representatives of their countries, regardless of the level of cordiality or hostility between them

* Refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other nation-states, specifically religious affiliations, which were the basis for the preceding Thirty Years War which had devastated Europe

These precepts held sway until WWI when the US President, Woodrow Wilson, injected a strong theme of idealism when the US entered the war. His goals were (1) self determination of nationalities, regardless of prior national boundaries, (2) "making the world safe for democracy", and (3) collective security. These goals flew in the face of the Westphalian accords by postulating the existence of a higher (but undefined) diplomatic/legal/moral authority that took precedence over peaceful relations between established governments.

This issue is of particular importance today as it underlies many aspects of US foreign policy. Without offering answers, I'll pose the following dilemmas which Kissinger's book brings to mind:

* There appears to be an inherent conflict between the goals of maintaining peace among nations (diplomacy based on realism, the Westphalian accord) and supporting idealistic goals generally accepted by Americas, including democracy and human rights in other nations (diplomacy based on idealism, the Wilsonian approach). Can we achieve both peace and our idealistic goals? If not, how do we prioritize between them?

* Legal structures in the West, especially Anglo-American legal structures, are based on the mutual acceptance by all parties (or at least most parties) of the existing legal system as a means of settling differences within nations. The concept of "international law" among nations is not so well defined and certainly lacks the level of universal acceptance required to make it effective.

There are tough questions. I thank Kissinger (and Kennan) for helping articulate them. Solving them will be up to their successors.

One view on how US Foreign Policy should be

This book is a treatise from America's top expert on diplomacy Henry Kissinger about the United States foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. It is unfortunate that the book was written before 9/11 and the start of the war on terrorism, save for a brief afterward that is mostly in line with Kissinger's pre 9/11 views.

The book is entertaining and put in a very organized sequence. It highlights the cross Atlantic world leading American-European alliance and offers fresh perspective on how these relations should develop as the European Union gains shape and witnesses a surge in its economic, demographic and geographic might.

Kissinger also talks about other regions in the world including the Middle East and Africa. The book has a much needed historical background about all of the events that it discusses making it easier for readers who are not familiar with overseas issues to get a grasp of what the author is talking about. Kissinger then gives his recommendations on how America should handle its world affairs in the coming century.

He debates the United States role in a growingly globalized world and offers suggestions on how America should deal with global organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.

Kissinger sounds more often than not a traditionalist in his foreign policy perspective in that he doesn't view fighting terrorism as the world's top priority. He rather maintains a tone of what America should do to maintain its "assets" and "strategic interests" around the world and how this would define America's role making or breaking of world affairs.

The book also lacks accurate research and is kind of a blown up opinion. For example, Kissinger mentions a ruling Sunni majority in Iraq and an opposing two minority blocs, the Shiites and Kurds. It is a known fact, however, that the Shiites are the Iraqi majority.

A Diplomatic World Tour

Dr. Kissinger dissects the world into their geopolitical grouping, and discusses where current trends are taking each group. The book may be a little outdated since 911 and world terrorism was pushed to front stage, but generally the geopolitical groups remain. A united Europe dealing with a Russia once again as a rising power, the Middle East and the consequences of China becoming a mature power. As a reader that was of draft age during the Vietnam war it was ironic to read that Dr.Kissinger believes that the USA should not be a major player in the far East, but a better plan would be to play the power broker for the rivaling countries referencing Britain's role in regard to the powers on the European continent during the era of Napoleon.

This book is an easy read, very understandable. I read this book because the USA is always criticized for having no foreign policy every time World events hit us broadside.

Amazing YA Fantasy

Holy crap, batman. This book, y'all. It's like this crazy hodgepodge of things all smushed together in a neat little ball that totally came at me and knocked me down. It's fantasy, but it's more. It's a romance, but it's more. It's just a lot of good things. Except one thing. The love triangle, but more on that later. Let's return to the gushing.

You know whenever a main character just has it? (As if I know what it is. I clearly do not have it.) That's Lia. As I read The Kiss of Deception, I was practically decked out in a cheerleading uniform complete with pompoms. Lia is a great protagonist. She's the type that I hope younger girls look up to. Lia worked for this story, and this story worked for Lia.

Now, the downside. Even though this book is without a doubt a five star read for me, there's a love triangle. I never like them. Not ever, not even once. I think they're boring, repetitive, and frankly, they just plain piss me off. The one in The Kiss of Deception is no exception. I felt like it hindered the story more than it contributed to it.

The Kiss of Deception transcends the young adult age group. It's a story that can be enjoyed by any one of any age. It's a perfect example of what a high fantasy book should be like. If you've never read a fantasy book but you're curious about the genre, read The Kiss of Deception. It's the perfect introduction to an amazing genre.

Spoiled Princess abandons her people to war and barbarians b/c she doesn't want to be told what to do.

Let's talk about first impressions--they are IMPORTANT.

If, for example, you start reading a new book, and the first glimpses you get of ALL THREE main characters are less than flattering, you might be tempted to toss said book aside in disgust and hope the next one goes better.

YES. You might.

And honestly, in this situation, I would not blame you. Not even a little bit.

So here's the deal--I'm not one of those the-less-romance-the-better types. I'm the opposite, in fact. In most cases, a book completely devoid of romance is a book I will almost certainly find lacking. That being said, I don't like romance tossed in willy nilly, b/c, this book needs romance, so, "Hey! You two over there! Yeah, you! Make googly eyes at each other. I don't care if it doesn't make sense, just do it! Thaaaat's it, muuuuuchhh better."

In fantasy, one of the most common ways for romance to play out is the Arranged Marriage scenario. Neither party is happy about it, but something IMPORTANT is at stake, so two self-sacrificing souls agree to wed for the greater good. Then, despite the obvious unfairness of their situation, stuff happens, they fall in love, and they live HEA.

And this makes you happy, b/c SELF-SACRIFICE.

But what if Princess is a narcissistic little brat who not only runs away from her arranged marriage, but drags one of her good friends along with her?

B/c who cares that the only way to ensure the safety of her family and the general population in the face of a barbarian invasion is to keep with tradition and unite her family with Prince's family, b/c NEITHER family has the strength to survive alone?

Not Princess. *frowns*

And not only does she not care, she laughs ALL THE TIME. Ah-ha-ha-ha laughs. Like Keira Knightley ruining Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice. "Running away equals TREASON to my hard-case father, who had my cousin hanged for desertion and buried him in an unmarked grave along with his mother (hard-case father's SISTER), who threw herself off a cliff in despair."

Ah-ha-ha-ha.

*flares nostrils*

Oh, and Prince only agrees to the marriage b/c his father tells him he can take a mistress.

And don't even get me started on Reluctant Assassin.

Holy grail for introverts!

I loved this book! For someone who has grown up an introvert all his life, this book gave me the tools I needed to work on my public speaking and communication skills in general. As an engineer people assume that I don't have much to say or I'm not in a position of leadership when that is the opposite. Sometimes i get caught up worry about what people think instead of asserting myself through my voice. This is a phenomenal book and if you're reserved or introverted like me, you should give it a read. I highly recommended it.

Helpful collection of advice to aid in public speaking. Probably not all of it will blow your mind, but at least some will, and there are samples for everything which is the most valuable part of the book. On second thought, worth it for the samples alone and how to use the advice.

As a beta reader for this book you might think I'm biased but I only write honest reviews based on my own opinion, so now that that's out of the way... great read. Very detailed stuff on making your next speech, and there are examples for everything that you can really just plug your own stuff into it and it would work nicely.

The rest? Your own practice, but that shouldn't be a surprise :)
