Sue Walters is a frequent contributor to Wood Carving Illustrator and Scroll Saw Workshop magazines. Very nice book.

I decided to take up pyrography because I had a friend who wanted a memorial plaque for her dog. I figured my sketches would translate well into something more permanent than just a paper drawing. While I'm not skilled enough to burn a highly detailed drawing, I think my first attempt with the help of this book, came out fairly well. I do wish there was more discussion and illustrations on using the various nibs, but what she does present was very helpful to me.

Update: I added a photo of my second attempt at wood burning. Mistakes, yes, but still amazed at what anyone can do!

I am just starting wood burning. This book focused mainly on nibs and I have a solid point. I would have liked more info on those type points. Otherwise, it had some nice projects, but I a going to look for a more basic book for beginners.

Very helpful book! I am just starting in wood-burning/pyrography and am not very artistic. This guide is very clearly written, with great pictures, and lots of good, detailed explanations on "all things pyrography." Using this book's guidance, I successfully completed 2 small pieces with only a modicum of practice! I think this is one of the best books out there on this topic!

700 pages of scratching in clay

I'm no where near having read this. I'm just a handful of chapters in. At best I have flipped through it and looked at all the pictures and read all the major headings.

This is a collecting of what appear to be somewhat authoritative papers on various aspects of ancient life in cuneiform society. The cuneiform writing that the papers are based on is what groups them all together. What that means is that this is the best book I've read on what life in Mesopotamia was like. And not just overall, but in specific to each topic as well. Before this book, I thought I had a basic understanding of the sexigesimal numbering system they used. Unfortunately, cuneiform covers millenia of use across many languages and vast amounts of open land. The theory and knowledge of the school setting contrast with the reality of uneducated people spread across a vast land that carries clay letters on the backs of men. Values drift across geography, and they drift across time. Different cultures use the writing differently. It makes it difficult to believe that anyone has ever actually deciphered any of these things. And now I know that I don't understand any of it at all, and I need to start over and try again.

I presume, from having paged through it, that the majority of the book I haven't read will be just as amazing as the small part I have.

And the English language of the book is impressive too. Popular culture aims low when it comes to writing. Newspapers, magazines, and even books, slide along the gutter of literacy afraid to peek their head up too high lest they alienate someone who encounters a word they've never heard before. No danger of that in this book. They do a good job of defining the meaning of all the ancient words, but the authors all have good vocabularies, so an English dictionary is a helpful addition to this book. And I think that is a good thing. Words are important. The more of them you know, the better of a person you are.

Many things missing here. And very few could benefit from it.

David Bean came up with the idea of selling the Euro contract at 5 PM open of futures trading, 24-tick stoploss from entry, close open position at 11 PM. The only explanation given relates to convenience of evening trading for those in the U.S. who work during the day. (Note: with an unmentioned improvement you could leave it running unattended and be watching TV and have a sound notify you when you're either stopped out or it's closing time ... but alerts or placing symbols on the chart would require additional programming you'd have to do yourself.)

There is no mention of why the Euro was chosen. The author requires you BUY his 2007 article that hopefully explains the theory. He says he can't include the article itself, for copyright reasons; but he surely could summarize the basis for this simplistic trading strategy in a paragraph. The .EL code fragments for even the most complex tweaked strategies take less than half a page of text so no need to buy them from author's website (where he says the needed "GET TIME" coding is provided); he rightly suggests you're better off typing it in (and of course finding the TIME function yourself) because then you might understand how it all works and then how you might try to improve on it (like maybe use a different currency, different class of instrument, or different times).

The code fragments provided are not "plug and play" even if you have name-brand Tradestation (R) because Mr. Bean does not include the EL function call that would get the correct times no matter what time zone you are in. Changing the book's "EC" to "6E" is the least of the needed effort to create a working strategy. (If you use a platform that claims "compatibilty" with EasyLanguage, good luck with that.) If you email Sunny Harris she'll probably tell you how to code in the right time even if you haven't yet bought her books.

Many observers have noted the tendency of markets to either reverse or accelerate at certain times of day as trading "rotates" around the globe during each trading week. But, as Mr. Bean notes here, trading U.S. evening time is usually thin. Therefore, the best average profits of ~5+ or 8+ ticks (from winners and losers combined in two provided tweaks of strategy #1) might easily be eaten up, or overwhelmed, by the bid/ask spread plus all the Tradestation (R) costs, latter one of the most expensive trading platforms in wide use.

Paraphrasing Magee & Edwards (1948): The entire basis of technical analysis is the axiom that past behavior can be used to deduce likely future. But Mr. Bean here doesn't care if the Euro was whipsawing up or down 5% or it was flat all day long in the prior trading day. The stochastic tweak looks at just one bar. That's not technical analysis per se; time is a fundamental, not a technical, in brief. By having a strategy that acts the same regardless of what the Euro did in the prior trading day, he is requiring anyone interested in the concept to do a lot of back-testing of alternative currencies, minimum. Maybe that's mentioned in the 2007 article. The most obvious question is this: Why did he choose the Euro and not the Yen? That question is very important because 5 PM is exactly when trading in Tokyo opens, with Europe sleeping. That "secret" is not revealed ... you have to buy his article to find out if it was even considered.

I read the entire book in less time than it took to arrange the return and drop it off with UPS. The reviewer who wrote that this book is giving away some kind of valuable secret is eerily similar in tone to the strong hyping voice of the author. Secret, shmecret. Baloney! It's a pump and dump. As Bean says at least five times in the book itself, this idea is no secret because it was published four years ago in 2007.

The author mentions Python and Euro Surge as proprietary trading systems sold by his company. They are other systems he wrote which also auto-trade the Euro future, albeit during NYSE hours. It would be nice to know how the returns from this public-domain "one-time $35 DIY Euro system" compare to Mr. Bean's proprietary Euro strategies that used to cost me $25/month in licensing fees to auto-trade at OpenECry. If you have this book, the comparative returns (in apples-to-apples form) can be found for free by looking them up as if you were considering subscribing to their proprietary auto-trading systems: Python, Euro Surge, etc.

P.S. I admit to being angry over the unmerited hype when first writing this review yesterday. After sleeping on it I see value here for people who would like to build their own automated trading strategy. There are very few useful books on this niche subject where the audience would be novice programmers of trading systems. This book does a good job of explaining the evolution of a trading system to improve returns. Trading the Euro

I bought this book as a way to diversify away from the US markets, and was
pleasantly surprised by the quality of the content that was offered. The
beauty of the book is the education on how to build FOREX trading systems,
but the value is in the open fully disclosed TradeStation code.

The book walks you through several iterations of failures and successes with
regard to system design, rule isolation, and time diversity of systems
building ultimately leading up to winning systems.
The systems are simple to understand, based upon common sense
principals that give you the confidence needed to trade the systems. The
systems are very tradable in their raw form, but I chose to add some minor
enhancements based upon my personal trading style.

I am a day trader, and run these systems on a fully automated basis off a
virtual private server. On a personal note David is very helpful in
answering questions or bouncing ideas off of to improve the personalization
of the system, if you so choose. I highly recommend the purchase of this
book, as the cost is nominal compared to the value of the trading systems
provided.

About the Author

One of my favorite quotes from the book is

Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms by Will Richardson provide the reader with numerous Web 2.0 tools from weblogs to social media sites and everything in between.
This is the 3rd edition of the book, published in 2010, when social media and online networks were becoming more common. According to Richardson, “A growing majority of students are immersed in social networks and technologies outside of school, and most have no adults in their lives who are teaching them how to use those connections to learn” (p. ix). With that being said, this book is not only for teachers, but also for other adults.
Each chapter of this book is dedicated to a Web 2.0 tool that should be added to a teacher’s toolbox. Richardson describes the tool and even provides examples of how each could be used in the classroom setting. The “Teacher’s Toolbox” includes: weblogs, wikis, really simple syndication, aggregators, social bookmarking, online photo galleries, audio/video casting, twitter, and social networking sites.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is: “Today’s schools are faced with a difficult dilemma that pits a student body that has grown up immersed in technology against a teaching faculty that is less agile with the tools of the trade” (Richardson, 2010, p. 7). It’s time to change this dilemma. As educators, adults, parents, etc. we need to immerse ourselves into the technology as well in order to understand our students and to educate them to their full potential.
Author and technologist Marc Prensky said, “This online life is a whole lot bigger than just the Internet. This online life has become an entire strategy for how to live, survive, and thrive in the twenty-first century where cyberspace is a part of everyday life” (p. 7). Don’t you want to thrive in the twenty-first century and more?

A good introduction to these technologies with directions

A good introduction to these technologies with directions, almost like a basic user-friendly instruction manual. It's all easy to read, and there are examples of how these technologies are used with a pedagogical argument for them. My one concern is that while this author strongly advocates for the technologies and makes a strong case given our digital age, he kind of glances over the pitfalls which he acknowledges. I do think there should be more there. He runs paperless classes, but I personally don't think we are there yet, especially in the elementary grades, and there is also more and more evidence emerging that misuse/abuse/overuse of technology is having a detrimental effect on learning. I would therefore advocate more balance than he does. Students absolutely need tech skills, and these technologies, USED RIGHT, can be great tools. I love technology, and this book will help educators understand these technologies better and guide them into beginning to use them. At the same time, his VERY zealous advocacy for a paperless world and a bit too loose of an attitude, I think, around some of the cons (i.e. He even strongly advocates using social media in classrooms.) associated with these technologies should give us cause to pause. Still, overall, a text I can recommend as a decent intro. to these technologies for educators.

Good Read!

In this book I really thought that it was helpful for teachers and parents alike. There are always those tough questions that we face as adults when it comes to parenting and educating and this was a helpful resource. One of the main chapters that I focused on was chapter 3. This chapter is about how all parents, students, and administrators are clear on why this technology is being used in the classroom. For parents the first thing that they can do to make sure their child is safe is give their student permission to use this technology for school. Most schools send home an acceptable use sheet to sign and parents should be aware of this and make sure that they get one. Parents also need to communicate with teachers about what the teacher is doing to make sure that student privacy is protected. Parents need to make sure they talk to their children about never putting personal information on the blogs and the parents also need to know the process for reporting problems with blog content. Lastly as a parent they need to oversee the student's blog and then decide what to do with it at the end of the course. When creating a weblog with students always start small and work your way up. Blogger.com created by Google is one of the easiest weblogs for anyone to use, there is no perfect way to use a blog but this one is up there for ease of use and not a lot of confusion. As a teacher it is hard to track all of what your students are doing, however, you can follow your students and watch their posts. You can edit and have different templates and even add pictures to blogs as well.

I have all 5, I bought them for a class, and they are terrible. They are poorly written, horribly outdated, and the production values are nonexistent. Many of the pictures and diagrams look like they were photocopied and taped into the book, and there is no coherent progression of the information. Each tidbit of information is given in an arbitrary order with no rhyme or reason; there's no "flow" from one thing to the next, just random factoids. And when I say outdated, much of the information is at LEAST 10 years old, and there is little mention of any of the new developments, even things that happened a couple years before the time of printing. If you need these for a class, get other books to supplement these. If you're just interested in the subject, look elsewhere.

Used this book for a class. It has some good material but I am not a fan of CEH overall. I don't think there is enough low level material to really let the reader grasp the fundamentals. It's great for learning the basics of tools.

Great ideas

If you want to use more cooperative activities and make your classroom more fun and engaging I recommend this book highly. I think people teaching any subject could use this book, not just math teachers, even though the title sounds as thought it is for math teachers in particular. I used ideas from this book already with my students and it went very well. I think the ideas in the book can help students more deeply consider questions posed by their teachers and in class and homework assignments. It had so many ideas that I could not take them all in the first read through and had to read it again and take notes. I plan to look at a list of the ideas in the book while I lesson plan.
