About the Author
Keith E. Whitfield, PhD, is Director of the Center on Biobehavioral and Social Aspects of Health Disparities, Director, Developmental Psychology Program, and Senior Fellow, Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, Duke University, USA. He has received numerous awards and honours including the 2010 Distinguished Mentorship in Gerontology Award, the 2007 Leadership Award, GSA Task Force on Minority Issues, and the Allen L. Edwards Endowed Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of Washington, Seattle. Dr. Whitfield has received or been a part of grants totalling nearly 10 million dollars; authored over 90 professional articles; 20 book chapters; and coedited 3 books, among other accomplishments. His research involves the study of individuals and twins resulting in "The Baltimore Study of Black Aging (BSBA)"; the first data collection designed to examine the influence on everyday cognition and health among African Americans. Dr. Whitfield also developed his own twin study of health and psychosocial factors related to health called the Carolina African American Twin Study of Aging (CAATSA). CAATSA is one of the largest in-person studies of adult African American twins. Tamara A. Baker, PhD, is Associate Professor in the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida, USA. She is a Gerontological Society of America Fellow, the current Chair of the GSA Task Force on Minority Issues, and has been recognised by National Institutes of Health as a promising scholar in the area of pain research. She has been an invited speaker at several national scientific meetings to present her research on health disparities among diverse race populations. Her research has been published in several high impact scientific journals and has featured in a number of venues such as the New York Times. Dr. Baker recently received funding from the NIH National Cancer Institute to examine psychological, social, and cultural factors influencing cancer pain management in older adults.
