About the Author
Fred Cooksey has taught college English for more than fifteen years. He currently teaches composition, literature, creative nonfiction, and journalism at Holyoke Community College. He is also an associate editor of the Historical Journal of Massachusetts. He has taught in private liberal arts colleges, universities, and prisons. He has a B.A. in philosophy from George Mason University, an M.A. in English, also from GMU, and an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He lives in Easthampton, Massachusetts.

Quick & Dirty Sparkles

Fred Cooksey's Quick & Dirty is one of the few high-quality style guides for writers. It speaks to the reader-writer with respect rather than lecturing or stunning us into an intellectual coma with whole mountain ranges of mechanical rules. The section on "Directness: Avoiding Stupid Writing" is alone worth the price of the book, which is not only reasonable--compared with most textbooks it's closer to free (under $20 as of this writing). This is a most useful, eminently practical reference that values its readers' time and cuts to the chase. As a college professor for 20+ years, I highly recommended it.

Traveling toward the coast, you see changes in the landscape and in the architecture. This reflects both the natural and the historical variety: the Venetians built their buildings one way, the Austrians another. Slovenia’s natural beauty is astonishing. Legend relates that when God was allotting nature’s bounty, he forgot Slovenia. His last-minute solution was to take bits of the best from other places: gorgeous Alpine ranges, the less craggy Pohorje mountains, the Pannonian plain stretching toward Hungary, hill after hill rolling southward into the horizon, the unique karst landscape, rivers aplenty, and a few miles of Adriatic coastline. Never having had a glorious unified kingdom in the past, Slovenians identify themselves not by blood or history but by their language, which differs from the other languages of the ex-Yugoslavia. The older generation is fluent in Serbo-Croatian, which helps for politics and trade, but has little of its historical baggage, and the country has geo-political importance as a politically stable stepping stone to the Balkans. As far as nationhood goes, Slovenia’s golden age is now. There is a sense of change in the country—mostly for the better, and not the dull stampede toward materialism that one sees in some other former Eastern bloc countries. As a tourist destination Slovenia has it all, from medieval ruined monasteries to whitewater rafting. The people of this lovely land are genuinely glad that others are “discovering” their country. There are no real language problems; the younger people all speak English. Moreover, membership of the EU means that this is a country in transition. Culture Smart! About the Author
Jason Blake teaches in the English Department at the University of Ljubljana. Born and raised in Toronto, he has been living in Slovenia since 2000. In addition to a PhD in English literature, he has an MA in German, and before moving to Slovenia he spent over three years studying and working in Germany and Austria. � He has translated widely from Slovenian (and less widely from German), primarily in the area of cultural studies. Among his published translations are five books, myriad articles, as well as over a dozen short stories by different authors. He is the author of Canadian Hockey Literature, and a book-length essay-writing guide that focuses on cultural differences between Slovenian and English writing. In 2007/2008 he worked as a language trainer preparing civil servants for Slovenia’s presidency of the European Union.

Great intro to Slovenian culture

Charmingly written, informative and brief (164 smallish pages) summary of Slovenian history, geography, customs, attitudes, family life and social relations. Jason Blake has a good eye for the essentials of Slovenian culture, and gives good examples of how Slovenians resemble or differ from people of other cultures. Good sidebars on climate, demography, national holidays, and even a few everyday phrases in Slovene.

I know that image consultants have this book, all their principles mimic everything that is written in here. A must have for everyone!!

This book is a great book to understand and enter into the market. I bought the whole series and read them from cover to cover. This is not for the advanced student, but the beginner.

I also think that fashion designers should have a thorough understanding of color theory, which is really not taught that much or well. It is also a very complex subject to learn and understand.

BUT!!!!!

Unfortunatly in it's description it does not state that is targeted to women... all the drawings, clothes and etc... are for women... yes you can grasp the concepts but it would be better to have exemples and descriptions intended to men as well.

excellent coverage of transistor amplifiers

I like this book quite a bit. Unlike most books for 1 semester electronics - which try and broadly survey electronics for new students - Arun focuses on diodes, transistors and providing a comprehensive analysis of amplifiers and how to build them. He meshes theory with a practical understanding of various rules-of-thumb.

At almost 500 pages he has enough space to thoroughly cover most everything transistor-amplifier related.

This book would work well as a companion to a general-purpose university electronics textbook. Books like Faissler, Barnaal, Diefenderfer, Simpson, Fortney, Brophy and, of course, Horowitz & Hill.

Arun assumes you know simple DC and AC circuits and how to use a multimeter.

The index is quite poor: it's far too short and incomplete. There are no solutions or answers to any of the problems, either. I hate this. If I shelled out the cash for a textbook I should at least be able to check my answers. That's why I'm docking this book 1 star.
