An excellent book to ace wall street quant interviews

What I like most about this book is that it has detailed step by step solutions to the many many real world interview questions included in it. It explains how to approach common (and many not so common) problems --from analyzing the problem, breaking it down to its parts, to arriving at a good answer.It changes the way one thinks rather than provide mechanical canned answers.. Unlike a few other books that have been in the market this one has greater breadth and depth.I'd recommend the book to both job seekers and interviewers.

Lots of quant interview questions and detailed solutions!

Anyone who's been to a quant finance interview knows how difficult some of the analytical and technical questions can be. I recently bought this book (thank you, Amazon Prime!) to prepare for an upcoming interview, and was really impressed by the 200+ questions the author has collected as well as provided detailed solutions for. I've definitely seen some of the questions in real before, so I believe the author when he says these are real-world questions. This is a valuable guide for anyone going into quant interviews. If you're a newbie to the quant job market, this book goes well with another book, written by this book's editor, called Starting Your Career as a Wall Street Quant: A Practical, No-BS Guide to Getting a Job in Quantitative Finance and Launching a Lucrative Career which is more about general advice and tips.

Straightfoward. Concise.clinical. just what I needed.
I kindda knew the older edition since early med school days and I always saw it as a good book. It is nice to have my own. I carry it around everyday....love this anatomy book... but I'll see how valuable it is as I enter post grad :-)

This is a dense, very special book containing lots of thrilling ideas. Howevery, it presupposes a lot of knowledge on the different historical backgrounds, e.g. History of Islam/ Discoveries/ Theoretical Debates on post-colonial studies. It is though and thus an inspiring book for scholars. Yet, if you are not a scholar, there are better books to read for introductory purposes!

Hard to follow

I was unable to progress far into Ferro's work due to the poor prose, i understand that this is a translation of the original French so i do not know if it is the way the work has been translated or Ferro's writing style, that made it hard to follow the arguments being made. In addition, while the book contains an extensive biboligraphy there are no footnotes that corospond to them making follow-up work (to check the original source etc) impossible. From what i did read, some of the arguments it did make are dated or covered better by more modern works such as 'After Tamerlane' by Darwin.

Man the Bird could play

This book really helps you appreciate what a master of jazz Charlie Parker really was. Seeing all of these solos with the chord changes right above sometimes makes you wonder "How did he think to do that?"

I like using this book for sight reading practice and a little bit of analysis afterwards. I read through the solos veeeery slowly (did I mention he's ridiculous?) and then look over the parts that I thought sounded pretty cool to see what he was doing. If you're a trombone player don't be intimidated that he had buttons to press very rapidly, just buy the book and play some great jazz, even if you're playing at 1/3 the tempo.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in improvising or just reading jazz. Especially trombone players.

Parker for Trombone

The book is an awesome transcription of Charlie Parker and his amazing solo and style. It is very accurate. It's a great way to enhance your improvisation library. The only problem that I had, was that the music is written down an octave than sounded by Charlie Parker. Obviously the tenor sax plays in a higher range. It's not really a problem, but you have to play an octave higher along with the recordings to try and match the timbre of the instruments. I guess it saves you from reading ledger lines or tener clef. Anyway, great book for a great price.

A must have for a jazz vocab.

First off, I have to correct funkybass4ever "baynzer66" 's review as he/she has commented that all transcriptions are in the key of C. This is incorrect and misleading. However all transcriptions are devoid of key signatures which is very useful in jazz, especially in bebop due to the rapid movement through key centers and the heavy use of chromaticism.

Now to the book itself. I view the omni book as one of the most valuable books of transcriptions out there, even if there are a few mistakes in it. It's one of those books that anyone learning the language of jazz needs to at least look at. It's nice to see that it's in bass clef (as I play bass); my treble clef version (I also play guitar) is well hammered and much loved.

If you are a bass player (or anyone else for that matter with good taste) and want to see/hear a bass player using Parker's vocabulary check out Dario Deidda, start at youtube. (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say that!)

comprehensive and lucid

This glossary is one of the best I have seen, combining both exhaustive and detailed enteries as well as a wide range of coverage. Literary periods from Old English to the Postmodern are discussed in detail - the article on postmodernism is almost six pages. Critical approaches such as structralism and postcolonialism are lucidly presented. Literary trends and tropes are explained with illustrative examples. Crossrefrencing is particularly very useful. All this makes this glossary a good study aid for both literary students and scholars.

Offers far more depth than its title suggests

Yes, this is an excellent glossary of terms. It is also much more. Within these 420 pages, the authors have taken time and space to explore in depth the significance of varied approaches to literary analysis and scholarship.
The confusing and politicized nature of 20th Century literary criticism is served well in Murphin & Ray's clear and even-handed explication of various schools and styles. I think that new initiates to literary studies will appreciate the lengthy analyses given to critical schools/styles ( from aestheticism and close reading... to new historicism and 'theory' ). I find that this humbly titled "glossary" offers clearer and fairer insights into of these stormy academic seas that most books claiming "Intro to Criticism" in their titles.
This is a great reference volume for literature students. My only disappointment was the lack of references, and of suggestions for reading in more depth (other than in-passing mention of authors' names and occasional book titles), but that of course would have taken this volume further beyond the class of mere "glossary".
Still, in summary: indispensable - unsurpassed!

I bought this book to help me with a school project that involved identifying about fifty different literary devices in a novel. It offered thorough definitions and examples of everything I needed. I will cherish it as an English major.

Ramayana: The Game of Life - Book 3 - Stolen Hope

Practically every Hindu is familiar with the Ramayana and knows there are various versions. Every new version is definitely a labor of love and dedication. Shubha Vilas, an Engineering and Law graduate, involved with the Hare Rama movement, has also brought out the Ramayana in multiple volumes. The only volume I have read so far is Ramayana: The Game of Life - Book 3 - Stolen Hope. There is much to learn and relearn from each version and each time we read the Ramayana, and there are many descriptions which are captivating.
BUT, the printing is on translucent paper, so the printing on the other side shows through; paper with greater opacity would have been better. The font is small, but the line spacing is 1.5. Larger font and single spacing would make it more readable, especially for senior citizens, who are most likely to buy this book.
The USP of this version is the author's footnotes, which are comments/ lessons (just like personal comments during a lecture). But many of these comments are in abstruse language, or use archaic language, so the point of having these comments is greatly diluted, e.g. The lowest nature of a leader becomes the highest hallmark of a follower. The footnotes are wonderful, but some could be simplified (e.g. True friendship shines when the happiness-sun sets could be written as True friendship shines when the sun of happiness sets).
There is also a plethora of errors, spelling mistakes, absence of quotation marks and wrong usage of words (e.g. principle wives instead of principal wives), which make the book difficult to read, leave alone enjoy, appreciate, recommend or gift. The language in the main story includes (only on P. 110-111):
…and her mission as is; ...winnowing fan-like sharp nails…; … guise-shifting abilities.; My preponderances are non-superseded…

Ramayana: The game of life Book 3-Stolen Hope

Most of my age have grown up listening to stories of Ramayan from our elders and can narrate the common and most popular stories from the epic quite easily to our kids.This book from the series "Ramayana: The game of life" is book III 'Stolen Hope'. In this book the duration of exile for Rama, Lakshmana and Sita is narrated through various stories that are interconnected to various other characters who each play a part in the whole epic.
There are many stories in the book which I was not aware of and only after reading those I could connect certain events to larger part of story. Author Shubha Vilas explains the context of stories in a way that might feel relevant to the younger generation.
The example of Maricha who turned himself into a golden dear and lured Rama away was the one which I found quite apt. With this example author explains that if we run after cheap thrills in life, we may be as well walking away from a good, balanced and virtuous life and endangering ourselves.
Another example when Ravana tries to woo Sita by disrespecting her relationship with Rama will relate well with younger generation too. He has described rightly that for love to have impact in relationships, there has to be transparency for respect for each other to bloom.
By giving the example of Surpankha's shifting focus from Rama to Laxmana , author has brought to light the importance of loyalty in relationships. That an unstable and questionable loyalty can never be the basis of a long lasting relationship is explained beautifully in the book.
The author has tried to connect with easy explanations of situations presented in Ramayana. There are many examples for refernce to look at situations in today's age too like Bharata's decision to stay in Ram's shadow, Sita's way with words, Jatayu's reverence etc..
However, if I go for nitpicking there are some proof reading and translation mistakes which jars the reading pace. The sentence formation is quite poor at many places. Usage of wrong words like 'besiege' instead of 'beseech' stick out like a thorn. The usage of adjectives seems too much forced. I was put off just for this reason while reading the text.
Read and decide for yourself whether it relates and applies to your daily interaction with all kinds of people.
