David Welch is professor of modern history and director of the Centre for the Study of War, Propaganda, and Society at the University of Kent, where he specializes in twentieth-century political propaganda. Nice general overview of Old Testament History

This book, `A Survey of Israel's History' is basically a chronological narration of the history of Israel. It traces the history from before its inception as a nation during the time of Abraham, till the period just before Jesus' birth.

Together with a narration and slight commentary based on the biblical text, the authors also provide arguments mostly based on archeological evidence to ascertain dates and locations of events and places in Israel's history. Using these evidences, they also paint the local geographical and cultural background of the places and surroundings of the events that they narrate.

Along they way, the authors also tackle some common arguments against the historical accuracy of the Bible, and very soundly argue for the validity of the inerrancy of the Biblical accounts. They defend the traditional conservative views of dates, places and events against modern liberal thought that seek to undermine the inerrancy of scripture.

The stance of the book is a conservative one, using the literal approach to scripture, especially of dates and genealogies. It assumes the factuality of scripture and views it as the highest and most correct truth, over and against tradition or archeological evidence. They hold strongly to the plain sense of scripture, choosing to accept the possibility of miraculous events against modernistic thought that seeks to explain away the miracles into natural events.

However, the book has quite a strong archeological focus. Whilst focus is still on the facts of the Bible, the authors, especially the reviser, tends to concentrate more on using the archeology to prove his case then the Bible itself.

Also, at times the spiritual significance of certain events are neglected in the commentary. The event is simply mentioned without any explanation of why God allows such or why it is recorded in such a way. A large portion of the book explains the `what' aspect of the events, but less of it is focused on the why.

Therefore this book would be useful for getting a good overview of the events in Israel's history from a conservative traditional viewpoint. These views are further enforced with archeological evidence. However, for a more biblically focused in depth study, a commentary of the individual books of the Bible would be required.

My two boys (ages 5 and 6)are Bionicle crazy. I think we've bought enough Bionicles to keep the Lego business afloat on our own! They love sitting down with me on the couch and listening to me read another chapter in this tale of the Toa's beginning. I think it's a good way to use something they like and join in with them by reading to them about it. It's an expression of love from me to them. Since there are no pictures in the book I encourage them to use their minds to imagine what the pictures would be as I read to them. My 6 year old especially does this and afterwards can describe the setting of his imaginary pictures. One of my favorite things to do is read to my kids, so this book was a no-brainer for us. It has brought us lots of enjoyment!

Looking For A Good Book...

For Bionicle fans, Scholastic recently put out a series called the Bionicle Chronicles.
There are 4 books in this new series. Each book averages 125 pages. The first in this series is called Tale of the Toa. This book is set in the ancient land of Mata Nui. Makuta, a powerful evil has risen, causing a darkness to cover the land. Six heroes called the Toa, wash ashore the beach of Mata Nui to help save the Matoran people. Their purpose is to restore peace and destroy all of the evil on Mata Nui.
I couldn't put this book down, it was so exciting. Throughout this whole story, I felt like I was part of the action. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good action/adventure story. If I could say two words about this book it would be READ IT!

I gave this book a five for amazing. I gave it this rating because I think it gives out a lot of information about the six toa, Mata Nui, Makuta, and other important things. This book is about how the six toa, Tahu, Lewa, Kopaka, Onua, Pohatu, and Gali, find all of their Kanohi masks. They have to fight giant beasts and risk their lives to get all of the great masks and to awaken Mata Nui out of a deep slumber.If you want to read about six mighty heroes on an action-packed adventure to save their home island, you should read all the books in this series. Will they succeed or will they fail? Read to find out.

I was 17 years old teaching at Ernie Ball's Guitar Shop in Tarzana, California. That's where I met Mel Bay through a workshop he taught. It was then that I took myself through his 7 book guitar method the first time which was very instrumental toward my professional training. Now, all these years later just I completed the updated expanded edition of the 7 book method. It is a beautiful workout and journey of graded material including: 1. Reading studies in all keys and positions. 2.Beautiful chord melodies ranging from classical to folk, blues, jazz and latin in style. 3. Theory is an integral part of this method presenting harmonized chord forms, studies in thirds and triads and quartal harmony in all keys. 4. Technical development and challenge and strong musicality frame this great work. This production is in my opinion the consumate guitar method which I recommend as a must to all serious guitarists. Congratulations to William Bay for this masterpiece. --Michael Anthony

About the Author
Mel Bay was born on February 25, 1913 in the little Ozark Mountain town of Bunker, Missouri. He bought a Sears Roebuck guitar at the age of 13 and several months later played his first "gig." (He recalled playing until his fingers were raw!) Mel took up the tenor banjo shortly thereafter and continued to play both instruments. During his teenage years Mel played with a wild assortement of bands and characters in rural Missouri. Perhaps no "gig" was as strange as the job he landed with, in Mel's words, "a snake oil salesman." This flamboyant peddler would pull his ostentatious Pierce Arrow automobile, complete with steer horns mounted on the grill, into the center of a small, rural town. Mel would sit on the car and play up a storm on the tenor banjo. After a crowd gathered, the peddler took over and began extolling the merits of his "wonder elixer." In 1933 Mel Bay moved to St. Louis and began his professional career. He played with numerous local and traveling bands. In addition, he landed staff guitar jobs on several radio stations. Mel fronted his own trio (piano, bass, guitar) and played steadily for 25 years! He was equally adept on most fretted instruments and played mandolin, uke, Hawaiian guitar, tenor and plectrum banjo professionally. While Mel was actively pursuing his playing career, he continued to teach as many as 100 students a week. He decided to begin writing instructional materials due to the difficulty encountered by guitarists at playing good sounding chord forms in rhythm sections and due to the poor note reading ability prevalent among guitarists. After the war Mel was asked to write instructional materials on guitar for GI's wanting to learn music under the GI Bill. In 1947 Mel formed his own publishing company and wrote his landmark initial book titled The Orchestral Chord System for Guitar. (This book is still in print under the title Rhythm Guitar Chord System and continues to be one the finest rhythm guitar chord texts available!) His Modern Guitar Method was penned shortly thereafter. For years Mel traveled from town to town talking to guitar teachers and players and showing them his publications. At one time Mel claims to have known virtually every guitar teacher in America on a first name basis! The guitar and Mel Bay books caught on in a big way in the 1950's. Things have continued to grow ever since. Mel used to sell D'Angelico guitars. At any given time he would have 5 or 6 "lying around the house." Mel played professionally on his New Yorker model but his favorite was the initial Mel Bay Model crafted as a gift for him by John D'Angelico. This famous guitar had all of the main features of the New Yorker but was a "cut away" model and had a slightly thinner neck. This instrument has been pictured on the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method for decades. Someone once calculated that sales of guitar books written by Mel Bay have exceeded 25 million copies. When asked, Mel frequently said that he quit counting long ago. Sales of his Modern Guitar Method have alone surpassed the 7 million mark. It is safe to say that Mel Bay is one of the pivotal figures in the world of guitar music and instruction in this century.

There is no substitution for practice, practice, practice until muscle memory takes over and one can express oneself with artistic verve and vigor. This methodology goes step by step learning the scales string by string, key by key, chord by chord. Proficiency takes literally hundreds of hours, no fooling.

Good Basic Guitar Book

The first Mel Bay Grade 1 book I had lacked the spiral binding and the CD, but the material inside was in the style of where I started way back when with learning the trombone - the basics, in other words. I've seen negative reviews about the songs being outdated, but you don't buy a book like this to learn songs, you buy it to learn to read music. There may be more familiar tunes in Hal Leonard books, but Mel Bay has it all covered for learning. I'm on books 3 and 4 now, slowly making my way through, and I've purchased this Grade 1 book for 2 other people so far, that's how much I respect what it has to offer. You have to seek out the spiral binding to make it lay flat while using it, and the CD can be used to demonstrate how the practice pieces should sound. Nobody I know is going to be as good as the recordings right off, but that's true of ANY music book, whether it has standard notation or tablature. Mel Bay's material will give you a solid basis to build on, but a good music teacher can help with the finer points. If I was teaching, I'd recommend this book as a practice source.

Matthew has been a professional software developer for the last 12 years, the last 6 of which have been spent in the education sector where he has now entered the sometimes-scary world of management, although when they see the mess he made of the budget that won’t last long. Matthew’s work and hobby is basically the same thing, but when he’s not working, he is loving life in a beautiful part of Wales with his Wife Lisa, and two kids Mikey and Charlotte.

The best book on learning xcode around, bar none!

Let me begin by saying that I have zero coding experience with xcode. I had been making many a false start with the very basics of even knowing where to begin let alone how I would ever remember anything I would learn from what I could find on YouTube or random websites .I often have a hard time motivating myself to start learning and find myself easily discouraged when I get myself in a bind with nowhere to turn. Then one day I decided to search amazon.com on my Ipad mini for all of the eBooks related to xcode for a beginner like me. I came across many but when I would read the sample pages, I would be lost within the first few pages. Then I found "Beginning Xcode" by Matthew Knott. I read all of the sample pages in one sitting and as soon as payday arrived, I immediately ordered the book and had it shipped asap. For me personally, I do much better with a hard copy then an eBook as I tend to make a lot of notes. Once it arrived, I started devouring it, page by page until I realized I had just spent a few hours in one sitting. I couldn't get enough. The book is written in a way that's easy to understand no matter how little programming experience you have. Its also great for experienced developers as it doesn't talk down to you or make you feel as if you reading below your level of understanding. I am a little more than halfway through it and I worry that I wont find another book as well written as this to continue on my learning path. This should be mandatory reading for anyone who has the desire to learn xcode but doesn't know how or where to begin. I would give it 10 stars if I could!!
BTW..I have recently spent the money to become an IOS apple developer. Not that I expect to have an app in the app store anytime soon, but just as a way to get my hands on extra learning material and pre release betas. I would have never had the confidence had it not been for this book.
