This is a textbook designed to teach students who are new to analysis what it’s all about. ... The path Zorn takes is based on several very reasonable principles. These include: building on calculus basics; focusing on mathematical proof, structure and language; staying with the basics; offering many examples and many solved exercises; and gradually increasing technical sophistication. ... There are plenty of exercises. They tend to follow a pattern where an exercise that is not completely straightforward is broken into multiple parts to guide the student to a solution.

About the Author

Paul Zorn was born in India and completed his primary and secondary schooling there. He did his undergraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis and his Ph.D., in complex analysis, at the University of Washington, Seattle. Since 1981 he has been on the mathematics faculty at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minnesota, where he now chairs the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.

Very basic real analysis

Pedagogically this is a fine text: the basic ideas of limits, continuity, Cauchy sequences, convergence, et cetera are explained very well. But there is little coverage of convergence tests for infinite series (e.g., even the root test is missing). And there is no coverage of power series. Two other texts that are close to this book in spirit and level of exposition are Howie's "Real Analysis" (Springer) and Dangello and Seyfried's "Introductory Real Analysis" (Houghton Mifflin). Yet both have more coverage of infinite series and both cover power series. Zorn's book might be fine for a weak class or for an "analysis for liberal arts majors" kind of course. But I doubt it will suffice as the text for a first course in analysis for prospective math majors.

About the Author
Since 1968, Bastian Clev� has produced more than eighty full-length and short films in the United States and Germany and has won numerous awards for his work. Less Than What I Would Have Expected from Focal Press

I received a review copy for a film class that I help teach. In reading through the first few chapters, I noticed it has a rather casual, slapdash style that is all too common in many recent film how-to texts.

Focal Press has slipped in recent years, especially when it comes to their editions from overseas. It would seem that the cachet of having a foreign author is authority enough to justify the publication of a particular book.

I stopped reading when I came to the paragraph where the author states, to paraphrase, "Sometimes the screenwriter neglects to number his / her scenes due to laziness and the production manager has to do it for him." ( With no explanation of the "spec script" rules of format vs. "production scripts." It was at this point I became convinced of the author's lack of understanding of the production management process.

The best book out there for developing a shooting schedule.

I took Production Management in film school and this book blows away what we used as our textbook. It will definitely steer you to getting things done in a professional manner, whether it is managing locations or developing a shooting schedule. This is the one book you need to make sure everything runs smoothly.

This is an overview at best.

I have purchased (and immediately returned, after thumbing through) this book, as after a couple of decades in the business I am now moving up to management. This book might be a useful read for a complete neophyte, or a student, perhaps it even "blows away" other school type textbooks on the subject as the previus reviewer suggested. For a professional, it is of little use. It touches on all subjects associated with production, but none of them are treated with sufficient depth. One thing is certain: you will definitely not be an well informed production manager if that is all you will ever read to get ready for that particular challenge, nor will you be ready to go out there, and pass yourself off as a pro..

Pat J. Gehrke is Associate Professor of Speech Communication & Rhetoric at the University of South Carolina. His research interests include the history of communication education, rhetorical theory, communication ethicsm and public political discourse.

A Much Needed Resource--AWESOME!

This is my second year teaching the new Common Core Standards and the only thing I could think of when I received the book was: "Where on earth was this book last year?" This is such an awesome and essential resource because it provides teachers with the support to develop the necessary skills within our students. The guidebook does just that, it guides the teacher with chapters that are organized into four `teacher-friendly' components. These components provide the details of how teachers are to provide explicit skill instruction for students while the students are perfecting the skills and continuing to learn others. I was to say the least pleasantly surprised (and relieved) to have a resource that walks me through each informational text reading standard, aligns the standard to strategies I can use immediately, as well as demonstrates how I should model it in my classroom for my students. The awesome anchor charts, the already made reproducible graphic organizers and the extensive suggested text lists are icing on the cake! A long awaited and much needed resource for 3-5 educators... Thank you Dr. Linder! ☺

This book rocks!

I chose this book because I am the reading teacher for our 5th grade team. I usually teach using a basal, but I wanted to try something new this year, especially with the CCGPS full implementation. I have fallen in love with this resource. It provides introductions to each standard that is to be taught, as well as a graphic organizer to accomodate the lesson. My students have so much fun creating and utilizing the organizers with their daily lessons. Thanks Dr, Linder!

About the Author

John Harrison has had a lifelong interest in wildlife, and birds in particular. In 1973, he was appointed as a radio producer in the BBC Natural History Unit; during the 18 years he was there, he worked with most of the top naturalists and ornithologists in Britain. As a birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast, he has made many visits to Sri Lanka over a number of years, and has a first-hand knowledge of the Sri Lankan avifauna. He is now the voluntary warden of a 70 ha wetland nature reserve for the Avon Wildlife Trust.

Tim Worfolk is a full-time wildlife artist with several publications to his credit.

Quality, complete guide for all Sri Lanka's birds

THE BASICS:
softcover; 48 color plates with good artistry show all 426 species known from the island; more complete than other similar books; species account for each bird focuses primarily on identification; a small range map is shown with each bird

THE REVIEW:
Of the few field guides that cover only Sri Lanka, this is easily the best book for several reasons. One, it is the only Sri Lanka guide to illustrate all birds of the island versus showing only the resident birds. Two, quality artistry show many more plumages. And, three, the text contains more information for identification and also offers tips to help distinguish between the similar species.

Each plate contains between 4-15 different species with most plates having about 10. To illustrate these birds, each plate may have anywhere between 15 and 40 different illustrations. As an extreme, the plate for the harriers contains only 4 species yet over 40 different illustrations. Consequently, this creates a rather crowded or busy looking page and all the images are slightly small to examine. This same scenario is true for most of the plates showing the raptors, gulls, terns, and shorebirds. However, I'll take this slightly cramped looking plate with all the many plumages over a plate with a limited selection of illustrations.

Across from each plate are brief notes (1-4 lines) that address the identification of each bird. A very small range map of Sri Lanka is also supplied for each bird. Due to the small size of the island -- and of the map on the page -- the ranges are generalized. These maps can look much the same between all the birds and are only somewhat useful for making generalizations of the bird's distribution.

The final two-thirds of the book contains the species accounts. This is where each bird receives a few short paragraphs dedicated to identifying the bird and comparing it to similar species. This information offers nice detail and good notes that help to identify the bird. Other brief information is given for the voice, status/distribution, habitat, and range.

Any birding done in Sri Lanka should use this book as the primary reference. It is both a good book and, the best one dedicated to just Sri Lanka. A few other all-India books would also work, but the vast number of species included across the entire subcontinent would be overkill for the island. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample pages, October 2008)

Breathtaking

The dominant paradigm in to-days psychology is overtly mental and verbal, believing that psyhological and emotional disturbances can best be relieved by cognitive strategies. And also amongst spiritual seekers are there a growing tendency to focus primarily on the mental and intellectual, like advaita and people like James Schwartz, Tony Parsons, Ramesh Balsekar, Nathan Gill: just say you are 'free' and eveything else will follow....

So the revolutionary insights from the therapeutic movement of the 70s and 80s with dynamic meditations (Osho) and various adventurous therapies like Primal or Rebirthing seem to have been largely forgotten and put aside.

In this wonderful book Stan and Christina Grof argue convincingly for the utmost importance of dealing with the physical aspects of our nature, for catharsis and abreaction if we want to reach a state of true physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Combining - as usual from Grof - lots of convincing real life stories with penetrating intellectual insights and building a strong case for the benefit of holotropic states (states beyond the ususal limited ego-world) and their healing potential.

A very well-written book and - as usual - filled with comprehensivev evidence for the importance of a new world view and a devastaing blow to the pretensions of the ruling scientific paradigm and its naive and fanatic belief in materialistic monism.

Essential reading for all seekers, explorers and psychonauts.

In her engaging though sometimes preachy new book, Kingsolver recounts the year her family attempted to eat only what they could grow on their farm in Virginia or buy from local sources. The book's bulk, written and read by Kingsolver in a lightly twangy voice filled with wonder and enthusiasm, proceeds through the seasons via delightful stories about the history of their farmhouse, the exhausting bounty of the zucchini harvest, turkey chicks hatching and so on. In long sections, however, she gets on a soapbox about problems with industrial food production, fast food and Americans' ignorance of food's origins, and despite her obvious passion for the issues, the reading turns didactic and loses its pace, momentum and narrative. Her daughter Camille contributes recipes, meal plans and an enjoyable personal essay in a clear if rather monotonous voice. Hopp, Kingsolver's husband and an environmental studies professor, provides dry readings of the sidebars that have him playing Dr. Scientist, as Kingsolver notes in an illuminating interview on the last disc. Though they may skip some of the more moralizing tracks, Kingsolver's fans and foodies alike will find this a charming, sometimes inspiring account of reconnecting with the food chain.

Adult/High School–This book chronicles the year that Barbara Kingsolver, along with her husband and two daughters, made a commitment to become locavores–those who eat only locally grown foods. This first entailed a move away from their home in non-food-producing Tuscon to a family farm in Virginia, where they got right down to the business of growing and raising their own food and supporting local farmers. For teens who grew up on supermarket offerings, the notion not only of growing one's own produce but also of harvesting one's own poultry was as foreign as the concept that different foods relate to different seasons. While the volume begins as an environmental treatise–the oil consumption related to transporting foodstuffs around the world is enormous–it ends, as the year ends, in a celebration of the food that physically nourishes even as the recipes and the memories of cooks and gardeners past nourish our hearts and souls. Although the book maintains that eating well is not a class issue, discussions of heirloom breeds and making cheese at home may strike some as high-flown; however, those looking for healthful alternatives to processed foods will find inspiration to seek out farmers' markets and to learn to cook and enjoy seasonal foods. All I can say is excellent, excellent, excellent! As a nation, it's sad we'd left our food choices to big industry who have little interest in bringing us good food and more interest in stuffing their own fat pockets. I have nothing but praise for people who respect the land to produce a sustainable product for healthy consumption. Cheers to the Kingsolver's! Also recommended is Gary Nabhan 'Coming Home to Eat' - where he chose the difficult feat of eating locally in Arizona. For a fictional variety Ruth Ozeki's 'All Over Creation' and 'My year of Meats'. The latter may make you re-think about industry meat ever again.

Love, love, love this book!

Love, love, love this book! I originally read it several years ago, when retirement was just a dream and this book inspired me to aim at taking a similar leap in lifestyle. Since retiring, it's taken about three years, but my husband and I have gotten very close to living off our property and eating locally (whenever practical). Now that my Bookclub friends have chosen Animal, Vegetable, Miracle as this month's read, it's been such fun to reread this book to see just how close we've come to living the life Barbara Kingsolver writes about so eloquently. I've enjoyed reading this book a second time every bit as much as the first!

I really liked this book

I really liked this book. When I finished reading it- I wanted to move to the country and start growing my own food and raising my own livestock. I think Barbara Kingsolver does an excellent job of giving reasonable tips for those of us that can't buy a farm. I loved all of the recipes included. I also had the audio version of this book which I really loved. It is Barbara Kingsolver and her family that narrate the book and I think that added so much. This book has definitely changed the way that I look at, think about and buy food. I feel like I have a much better understanding of why local food is so much better. Kingsolver does a great job of educating without being preachy. She is passionate about her beliefs in food but knows that it is not realistic for most of us. I think this is a must read for anyone who cares at all about the food they eat or the planet we all share.

About the Author

Rick Houser is currently Professor and Department Head in Educational Studies in Psychology, Research Methodology, and Counseling at The University of Alabama. He has been Associate Dean in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Also, he was a professor and department chair for several years at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Rick Houser has taught graduate-level research courses for more than 25 years. He received his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh in rehabilitation counseling with a minor in research methodology. He conducts research in ethical decision making, stress and coping, educational neuroscience, and neuroscience and counseling.

Steve Thoma is professor and Coordinator of the Educational Psychology Program at The University of Alabama. He received his doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1986 with an emphasis in personality and social development and a focus on moral psychology. He conducts research on the measurement of moral judgment.

The descriptions of different cultural perspectives on ethics is way oversimplified. The case studies could be more multi-layered. In general, I don't think this book is up to date politically.
