They Know What Buttons to Push, and They Won't Stop Pushing Them

This is a well-written and entertaining, yet frightening book about how tech designers use our own evolutionary structures to get us addicted to their products. In addition to an explanation of the science behind addiction, the author uses interesting anecdotes to illustrate key points. As a result of reading this book, I've decided to be more cognizant of the time I spend on apps, social media, and just staring at my phone in general. I hope that by being able to recognize the weapons that are being used against me, I can combat them in order to take control of my own attention.

Guidance in a world where everything's a trap

Great book. Read it in 3 days because the book was captivating, and this is such an important topic. I walk onto the bus headed to UCSD and 90% of people (mostly students) are engrossed in their smartphones?!?

Recommended to several friends already. Excellent ideas in the book and to top it off, it's written very well. Each line flows into the next and there's a great connectivity and transition between ideas and examples that demonstrate the idea.

I loved this book because it resonated with my childhood with gaming and facebook addictions. And my social failures in middle/high school because of technology. I now am strongly disengaged from the internet and social media except to learn.

Essential Reading

This book is essential reading. I can't stop thinking about it or talking about it. I particularly appreciate the way the book breaks down what appears to be a wild lack of willpower (I'm looking at myself!) into its component parts of behavioral addiction. I am thinking differently about the consequences of my screen time (and my children's) and about the approaches I take to curb my excess. Well-written, well-researched, well-timed. I will be giving out many copies of this book to family and friends!

A book filled with honor, humor, dignity, fear and above all TRUTH!

Violence of Action is the voice of the men who served their country in the aftermath of 9/11. Whether they felt a call to action as they watched the Twin Towers fall or were already deeply immersed in their roles as defenders of the free world; these men served with honor and dignity. These are the memories of the men who returned from hell on earth and the memories that they carry of their brothers in arms that did not return with them.

Each chapter is told from the point of view of a man that was willing to give his life, not necessarily for his country and definitely not for a cause; but for the man that stood to his left and to his right. While gripping and action packed the personality of each man shines through his words. The emotions whether the writer is expressing excitement, shock, fear and even amusement reaches out and pulls you in.

Eloquent and beautiful, two words I'd never thought I'd used to describe non-fiction. Most certainly I never expected to use them to describe a book about war. But then again it's not really a book about war. Violence of Action is a book written about the men that lived through war, by men who lived through war and edited by men who lived through war. And that's who I'm describing when I say eloquent and beautiful. The men.

If you want to read accounts of American badasses with big hearts and even better senses of humor, then this is the book you should buy. It covers the history of the Rangers in the War on Terror - missions from the assaults into Iraq and Afghanistan, to Jessica Lynch, Rhino, Anaconda, Winter Strike, recovery missions, you name it. These are personal accounts, often humorous, sometimes poignant, that are all together for the first time, under one cover.

Wonderful Music, Easy to Play

I have always love Yann Tiersen's compositions since seeing the movie "Amelie". A few years ago, this book was listed for $80 on a different website, so I am VERY pleased to have spent $33 via Amazon. The notes are a bit small, no numbers for finger positions on most pieces, so beginners are forewarned. I would consider this music advanced beginner to low intermediate. Haunting, lilting melodies. You can picture yourself in a sidewalk Parisian cafe as this music plays.

Gorgeous music

I first heard Yann Tiersen's Comptine d'un autre ete: l'apres-midi at a piano recital. I fell in love with the music and had to learn it myself. I am very pleased with this book except I am not thrilled with what I think was a stylistic choice on the part of the publisher to make the print very light and small. On aging eyes this is not a good thing. I have many piano works of comparable and higher difficulty levels in which the notes are much easier to read.

The music isn't particularly difficult - I would classify it as early intermediate - but a lot of the pieces require a fairly significant finger span so small hands will not be able to play these pieces.

I was hoping that the written music was at least close to the performance version by Yann himself. And this is!
Right on the money!
Its all there to learn...all ypu need to add is your own expression and tempo modification if you wish.

"The Constitution of Europe: "Do the New Clothes Have an Emperor? and other essays on European Integration" is an excellent book that I borrowed from a nearby library by chance. Truth to be told, I plan to buy this book even though I have already read it, due to the fact that it is the kind of book you just want to have. This book includes several essays and articles written by J. H. H. Weiler on European integration, from different points of view. That variety can be seen simply by reading the titles of some of the essays in this book, for example "The transformation of Europe", "Introduction: the reformation of European constitutionalism", "European democracy and its critics: polity and system" and "To be an European citizen: Eros and civilization".

Those essays were written by the author during a period of 10 years, and were finally revised, updated (when it was necessary) and compiled in this book, released in 1999. According to Weiler, he considered rewriting all these essays into a monograph, but settled on keeping their format in order to allow the reader to choose exactly what he wanted to read, according to his interests and available time. In Weiler's own words, "I expect that no one will read all the essays and articles in this book- not even my own doctoral students. But I do hope that many more will read some of its essays and articles that would be the case if this were a scholarly monograph of equal size".

I specially liked the fact that every chapter (that is, each individual essay) can be read as a standalone, because I think that allows everybody to choose exactly where to begin reading this book, and gives the opportunity of not reading something if the theme isn't particularly appealing. Despite that, if you start this book because you are interested in one particular chapter, it is highly likely you will end up reading at least some of the others, as the writer's engaging writing style will tempt you to go on reading. Also, and from the point of view of a non-native English speaker (my case), it is a pleasure to read something that is so well-written...

All in all I can say that all these essays and articles are highly interesting, and allow the reader to learn something more about European integration, as a process, an ideal and a reality everybody has to deal with. In my opinion, this book somehow manages to tackle quite well both the structure and ends of European Integration, and that is no easy task. Whether you are a student or someone who is just interested in the subject, I recommend this book as great reading material that allows you to read exactly what you find interesting and at your own pace.

The Big Book of Quantum Optics

This is the definitive book on Quantum Optics, and contains sections on semi-classical theory, quantum field theory, and lots of other things. Unfortunately, it does not cover research after the mid-1990s.

Bottom Line: This is the best reference book in the field of plain old Quantum Optics.

Very well writen book on Quantum Optics

This book is a self contained one on Quantum Optics. It gives systematic treatment of nearly very aspects of this field, good mathematical description of some methods and idea and even some historical developments of the topics. Though it seems a huge volume, it is really worth reading for EVERY beginner in this field. With this book, one does not need to look for other references to understand the topics.
