The difference between this and "Gimme Some Truth- The Making Of Imagine" is that "Gimme Some Truth" was a documentary made in 2000 about the actual making of the album, "Imagine."
This DVD, "Imagine" is the first run movie that was shown in theaters in 1988, just 8 years after John was murdered. It is the definitive (so far) biography of John's life and his music and is one of the best music biographies ever shown on the big screen.
I have this on laserdisc and have been waiting for the re-release on DVD for a long time. I also have "Gimme Some Truth- The Making Of Imagine" and every other official John Lennon DVD.
But this one is the first biographical film about just John (not The Beatles) that was released on the big screen. And it is great.

Imagine

The strength of "Imagine" lies in its clear-eyed depiction of its subject. Gifted and well-intentioned as he was, Lennon was no saint, and at times, misguided if not na�ve. Example: John and Yoko taking to bed to protest the Vietnam War makes no more sense now than it did then. Conservative cartoonist Al Capp visits them and calls their action "self-aggrandizing" (don't miss this sequence). In truth, their motives were noble, but their tactics were too bizarre to resonate. Clearly Lennon was still assimilating an unprecedented super-stardom, and coping with the psychic scars of a mother who abandoned him, by letting Yoko infantilize and control him. As John himself wrote, "Whatever gets you through the night..." This revealing documentary is a must-see for any Beatles fan.

A Wonderful Experience

The DVD release of Imagine was long overdue and now that it is available perhaps a new generation of music lovers will understand a little of the magic, majesty and tragedy of John and The Beatles. The film is as fresh and insightful as always. It sounds great, too.
My only problem, as mentioned in some of the previous reviews, is that the DELUXE isn't very. In the nearly two decades since the movie was originally released scant new material is available here. The packaging was minimal even for a standard feature release. That said, this movie is worth owning and should be shown regularly in junior high school music appreciation classes.
