This article provides a unique perspective on the Colt 1911 for both those who love it and those who can't stand another repetitious magazine blurb.
This a much improved and expanded Second Edition of "The Colt 1911 - A Mechanical Engineer's Perspective." Based on customer comments, the original 14 page text only article has been rewritten and expanded to more than 50 pages with pictures. An added Appendix includes recommended references, diagrams, and the text of the 1904 Thompson - La Garde Report.
Original comparison photographs of a 1913 vintage Colt 1911 and a modern Kimber 1911 are used to illustrate significant changes made to the Colt design. The author offers his professional judgment and person opinion on the "improvements" made in the last 100 years.
Have you ever wondered why the Colt 1911 has certain featues such as grip and thumb safeties, a wide hammer that sometimes "bites", the plunger tube and grip bushings, etc.?
How has the design survived for so long, even thrived in the world of competition shooting and self-defense?
How would the Glock 21 or the Beretta M9 have done in the pistol trials of 1910?
This work is the author's opinion based on experience and 50 years of reading and research on Colt 1911 pistols. It assumes the reader has some knowledge and experience with the 1911 handgun.
It is the author's conjecture regarding the process used by Government, John Browning, and Colt Firearms to develop the most significant semi-automatic pistol of the 20th Century and possibly the last pistol to be designed to kill men efficiently.
It is not a detailed "how to" for new 1911 shooters but will be of interest to those who want a unique perspective.

Not a Book - Just an Opinion Article
By Hemlock
This review concerns the second edition.
First, be aware that this is not a book, it's an article. The author's forward mentions this, even if it's confusing when looking at the descriptions for purchase. Second, it's an educated opinion of the author and not historically defensible, since there are no design notes left by John Moses Browning as to why he did things that he did. Given those understandings, if you are looking for an article by a mechanical engineer as to his opinion why the pistol was designed as it was, the concept of this article will work for you.
I have two basic problems with the article though. The first is the way it is written. As a mechanical engineer's opinion, it is a valid exercise. But the article is written more as informative fact instead of educated conjecture. While the conclusions are interesting, there is no way to know if they are correct. The author also tends to write as a mechanical engineer, and some areas get esoteric while others are glossed over. While understandable given the parameters of this article, it can be annoying to a lay reader.
The second issue I have with this article is that there is very little substance that is actually useful to the majority of readers. This article would definitely fit in an engineering journal or even a machinist's or firearms designer's trade publication, but it's marketed to the average firearms enthusiast. While the second edition supposedly has more charts and photographs, the photographs seem added simply to appease readers and not to enforce any conclusions about the mechanical design. And the charts and diagrams provide interesting and esoteric information from a mechanical engineering perspective but no useful information for the majority of 1911 enthusiasts.
Since the author took pains to call out some reviewers in the forward to the second edition and refute their poor reviews, I'll mention that my review, just as the author's article, is the opinion of the reviewer. I personally did not find this article to be a worthwhile purchase, but I am not a mechanical engineer interested in an interesting theory behind the design of a mechanical object.

How Well Did the 1911 Meet the Army Requirements?
By Dan M. Beadle
Short overview, written by a mechanical engineer who loves 1911's. But it could have been written by a product manager. He compares the 1911 against the Army requirements from 1911 to show that it meets all the requirements. Then he compares it with modern guns and compares them against the same requirements. For example he compares Glocks. In most cases he thinks 1911's are superior or equal to the modern guns, with the one exception of capacity.
I think it is a pretty objective review. I have Glocks and a 1911. Both are nice, but 1911 meets the Army spec.
Not very technical. Nothing on how it works. More how well it meets sure needs. Don't be intimidated if you are not an engineer.
Some complaints about price. This is more of a pamphlet than a book. I found it enjoyable and worth the price. Wish I'd read it before buying the 1911, but I'd still have made the purchase

A good history lesson.
By Barbara E. Sammons
I've been a l911 .45 lover since Uncle Sam introduced it to me during the Korea war. I've still got one. Every time I fire it, I think I'm listening to the voice of God speaking to me.
